James Madison University head softball coach Loren LaPorte is becoming accustomed to change. The past year has certainly had its fair share. Since last March, LaPorte has experienced a shutdown 19 games into the season, having a baby, a reduced schedule this season, and two games already canceled due to COVID-19.

As the James Madison University softball program’s career leader in home runs, Kate Gordon has earned the reputation as someone who delivers at the plate. Gordon has delivered in other situations this year as well.

Following the announcement of the Texas Fastpitch League, the Heart of America Elite Fastpitch League (HFL) made a similar announcement that will include club softball teams from 21 states.

In Loudon County, softball teams gathered to honor Madison Small. Small died suddenly from a form of bacterial meningitis. Two softball fields at Trailside Park in Ashburn, Virginia were named, "Madison Small Softball Complex" in her memory.

In its 30th year of honoring the nation’s best high school athletes, the Gatorade Company, in collaboration with USA TODAY High School Sports, today announced its honorees for the 2015 Softball State Players of the Year.
