Daily Update 10.30.13

As I post this I’m flying at 37,000 feet probably over Texas somewhere on my way to Orlando, Fla. for the Sun Classic Fall Showcase.  Thanks to in-air online service we’re able to get you some fun stuff today.  We start off with an eighth grader who’s Pac-12 bound but had a big life change happen this month.  We also report on a pair of SoCal teammates who have an interesting story on how they found that the other had committed to the same school.  We have more recruiting news and notes and finish off with the list of players working out at tomorrow’s skills clinic going on in Orlando…

Grad Year: 2018
Pos: OF
Club Team: Texas Bombers
School: previously: Excel Acad. (Stockton, Calif.); currently: Ed Rawlinson Middle School (San Antonio, Texas); high school: expected to be Sandra Day O’Connor (Helotes, Texas)
College: Washington
Events: OnDeck NorCal Jamboree, Zoom to June and Elite National Camps.

***

StudentSportsSoftball.com: It’s been an eventful last month for you in many ways as your family has just moved to another state…
Alysa Pinto: I just moved to San Antonio about three weeks ago. The Army stationed my dad here, this is his last assignment and he will retire in three years. We were lucky that we were able to stay in California for the last six years and that I was able to play for the NorCal Firecrackers with Coach Mike Baisdon. Coach Mike is the best coach you could ask for. Even though I was almost two years younger than the girls on my team, he believed in my abilities to play at the next level.

None of this would have been possible without all the hard work and dedication that the coaches put into helping me become the player that I am. When I got to San Antonio my dad was able to set up a tryout with the Texas Bombers. The 18 Gold coach, Scott Smith, put me through a workout and offered me a spot on the 16U National team the Texas Bombers Futures.

SSS.com: Describe how the recruiting process went with Washington… had the coaches seen you before the Elite Camp?
AP: Washington saw me play a few times last season when they were recruiting one of the girls from my team. Then they saw me at the Zoom to June Camp. After watching me when our team played at PGF Nationals this past summer they invited me for an unofficial visit. I went on my visit to Washington in August. It was awesome. I was then selected for the OnDeck National camp and Washington was there. I felt like I had a great camp. After the camp my travel ball coach, Mike Baisdon with the NorCal Firecrackers, called me and said that Washington was very interested in me. I was so excited.

Alyssa used to go to games at the Univ. of Washington and always wanted to play for the Huskies.
Alyssa used to go to games at the Univ. of Washington and always wanted to play for the Huskies.

SSS.com: Did they say if your performance there was a big factor in their offering or had that happened prior to the event?
AP: They did not specifically say that it was my performance at the camp, but I feel that it really did help my recruiting efforts. Being able to play against some of the best players in the country and in front of some of the biggest colleges was great.

SSS.com: Were you nervous at the Elite Camp seeing all the coaches in the stands?  Tell us how you feel you did and what helped you focus that day…
AP: I was not really nervous to play in front of the coaches. My dad took me to my first softball camp at Stanford when I was 10 and continued to take me to a few college camps each year. I was invited to my first OnDeck camp when I was 12 and I have played on the biggest stage when our team was able to go deep into PGF Nationals the last two years. I credit being able to play in those situations helping me to not be nervous in front of the big schools. I think the talk that my dad had with me just before I left for the camp inspired me. He said to have fun and give 110% in everything I do. If at the end of the day I can say I left it all on the field then I know I did my best.

SSS.com: How did you come to the decision to pick Washington?
AP: I have always wanted to be a Husky. My dad is in the Army and we were stationed in Ft. Lewis, Wash. for five years. He used to take me to watch Washington softball games and I have followed the team ever since. Ever since I watched Danielle Lawrie pitch in the World Series it’s been my dream school. Seattle is such a beautiful city and there is so much to do in the surrounding areas. It was always my dream to become a Washington Husky.

SSS.com: When and how did you tell them you’d be a Husky?
AP: Last Wednesday my parents and I gathered around the kitchen table so that I could call Coach (Heather) Tarr. We talked for a while about how I was doing at my new school, how my move to Texas was and how it’s different from living in California. Then she asked me if I have been doing my research on the schools I was interested in. I told her that I have been doing my research and narrowed it down to four schools and that Washington is my No. 1 choice. Coach Tarr asked me if I was ready to be a Husky and I said “yes, I absolutely am.” We were all so excited. It was a perfect match.

SSS.com: What are your emotions about this? It has to be exciting yet surreal in that you know where you’ll be playing college!
AP: I’m very excited. It still seems so unreal. Knowing that I will get to play softball for my dream school is awesome. Coach Tarr and the other coaches have been so great and I can’t wait to step on to the field and learn from one of the best coaching staffs.

SSS.com: Tell us a little about your softball background… when did you first start playing and what have been some key accomplishments?
AP: I started playing rec softball in Lodi, Calif. when I was seven years old. I played rec ball for two years, before my parents took me to my travel ball tryout with RR Gold. I played 10U and 12U with RR Gold. My dad thought it would be a good time to move up an age group so I tried out for TC Smash-Baisdon 14U and later we became NorCal Firecrackers-Baisdon. I think my biggest accomplishment was that I was able to excel at my game by playing with an older team and with teammates that pushed me to want to be the best player possible.

The young athlete says it was a great feeling having her father as an assistant coach last year.
The young outfielder says it was a great feeling having her father as an assistant coach last year.

SSS.com: What is it you love about softball to take it to the next level?
AP: I just love playing the game. I have always wanted to play on the biggest stage possible. I like working hard and it still pushes me now that I’m committed to Washington because I give 110% and work twice as hard in everything that I do.

SSS.com: (to Gabe Pinto, Alyssa’s father, who was an assistant with the NorCal Firecrackers)… What’s it like being on the field and in the dugout coaching your daughter?
AP: Being a coach on the team is pretty rewarding. We both get to enjoy the game we love with each other. Sometimes we have our differences, but that’s expected. I learned that it is better to let the other coaches on our team make the corrections, that way she doesn’t feel like dad is picking on her. I have been able to enjoy some of her greatest moments and not so great moments. I wouldn’t have it any other way.

SSS.com: (to Alyssa)… What’s it like playing for a dad who’s your coach?
AP: Well there’s a little bit of pressure knowing that he’s there but I still just focus on what happens on the field and if he talks to me I just listen and make my adjustments the next time around at my at bat and on the field the next inning. It makes me anxious a little bit knowing he’s now right there when I walk back in the dugout if I make a mistake, but at the end of the game I’m happy that he’s there with me by my side. It’s a great feeling.

Quick hitters:

Having played in NorCal and Texas what’s the difference in softball play/style… anything? It seems like softball in California is played at a faster pace. I think Cali has more speed and Texas teams seem to have a lot of power hitters.
What’s the most fascinating/fun place you’ve ever been (like on a vacation or trip)? Disney World in Orlando, Fla.
What’s your favorite subject in school and why? Art… because I have the freedom to express the way I feel through drawing.
Least favorite thing to do? My least favorite thing to do is speaking in front of people.
Morning or evening person? Evening person
Favorite ice cream topping(s): I love to put cookie dough, blackberries, hot fudge and caramel cups on my ice cream.
Dream job: My dream job is to be an athletic trainer for a pro sports team.
Fill in the blank… if I had one wish, it’d be: … to take a vacation to Paris.

RECRUITING NEWS:

*** Great story from the Riptide program out of Newport Beach, Calif. (the same program that McKayla Taylor plays for, the Pitt commitment we profiled yesterday.

Two seniors from the team, pitcher Lindsey Cassidy and outfielder Mallory Cleveland, have both verbaled to San Francisco State and the story of their commitment is pretty cool…

… we’ll let Tom Cassidy, father of Lindsey, tell how it happened:

An assistant coach first noticed Mallory at a Mizuno softball camp in the Spring of 2012. Mallory signed up for a camp at San Francisco State that summer and loved the school and the coaches. They apparently loved her too and offered her shortly after. She verballed in September of 2012

Lindsey was first seen by SF State’s assistant coach and lead recruiter in July at the 2012 Champions Cup when her 16U Renegades team played in the 18U division. Both the head and assistant coach for SF State saw her again about three months later at a showcase in Modesto in September 2012 when she was with Riptide Gold, and the following month we took an unofficial visit to the campus

SF State was the only school she wanted to go to because it fit her three requirements: big city, cool weather, and most importantly, a really good film school. They offered during her at the end of the visit and she accepted a week later.

In the meantime, the coaches had told us that another 2014 outfielder from So Cal had verballed about four weeks earlier. We didn’t know her name, what travel team she played on, or where in So Cal she was from. We planned to get the information from the coaches so Lindsey could meet her future teammate if they were ever at the same venue.

Mallory, seen here at the plate, will room with Lindsey at San Francisco State.
Mallory, seen here at the plate, will room with Lindsey at San Francisco State.

One night we were at Baseball Softball world in Yorba Linda and Lindsey was warming up for her pitching lesson. I look into the batting cage and noticed the girl who was taking hitting lessons was wearing shorts with “SF STATE” embroidered vertically down the side. I asked the parents why she was wearing them and they told us she had just committed to San Francisco State!

She was the other verbal… what are the odds that we would run into each other at the same instructional facility?

Lindsey and I met with Mallory and her parents a couple of times at Polly’s Pies down the street after their lessons at Baseball Softball World, and they quickly became good friends.

When Mallory was looking for a team we suggested she come over to Riptide Gold. She played with us one weekend and loved it so she joined the team. Mallory and Lindsey took their official visits to SF State together a few weeks ago and, of course, had a blast. They plan to room together next year in college.

Anna Hughey will stay instate to play for Western Carolina.
Anna Hughey will stay instate to play for Western Carolina.

*** Anna Hughey, a 2014 SS/IF who plays for the NC Lady Lightening program, has committed to Western Carolina.

Anna, who goes to Draughn High (Valdese, N.C.), hit .511 as a junior and was voted All-Conference and All-District.  Carrying a weighted 4.325 GPA, she also has played volleyball throughout high school.

*** More verbals:

Celeste Adriano, a 2014 C/OF for American Pastime, will sign with San Francisco State
Maya Hughes, a 2014 OF with the Jack City Jacobs, has committed to Purdue
Koreen Orozco, a 2014 P/1B for American Pastime, has committed to Holy Family Univ.
Megan Pittman, a 2014 3B/2B with the Georgia Knockouts Gold, has committed to Mercer
Katelyn Wagner, a 2014 1B/P with American Pastime, has verbaled to Coastal Carolina
Hanna Warren, a 2014 P with Finesse, has committed to Central Michigan
