NATIONAL RANKINGS

If you haven’t followed the FAB 50 rankings before when it was part of ESPN, two things to know right off the bat are that we like to include results from even the day before these rankings are released and we really like teams that avenge losses.
On Tuesday of this week, waiting for key results especially made sense because two of the top teams in Northern California – Archbishop Mitty of San Jose and Pioneer of San Jose – were playing each other.
It’s safe to say that had Mitty won, the Monarchs would have been at least No. 3 in this week’s FAB 50. Instead, Pioneer grabbed a 2-1 win and shook up the order that was penciled in earlier in the week. The Mustangs, who shot up to No. 14 in this week’s FAB 50 with Mitty falling to a position right behind them, didn’t get particularly dominant pitching from UCLA-bound sophomore Holly Azevedo, but she only allowed one run. The main reason Pioneer notched the win was a solo homer by Makenzie Drake in the top of the first inning followed by another solo shot by Caitlyn Weisner in the fourth.
As for the avenging wins, two teams that have done that already this season that helped them move up in this week’s rankings are No. 3 Hagerty of Oviedo, Fla. And No. 12 Santiago of Corona, Calif. Hagerty, which was No. 8 in the preseason, avenged its only loss in a 14-1 start by beating University of Orange City, Fla. Santiago did the same in a 7-1 start just on Monday of this week with a victory over Los Osos of Rancho Cucamonga, Calif.
Preseason No. 1 Mission Viejo (Calif.) has looked strong in its first three outings and obviously stays there, pending the team’s trip to this weekend’s Dave Kops Tournament of Champions in Bullhead City, Ariz.
The Dave Kops TOC also will see five other teams from this week’s FAB 50 in the field, including No. 4 Norco (Calif.). The Cougars, however, probably will have a big test in their first game of the tourney against O’Connor of Phoenix, Ariz.
Like Hagerty and Santiago, O’Connor also has already avenged its only loss and could be 12-1 when it plays Norco. The Eagles, who moved up to No. 11 in this week’s FAB 50, have to win an earlier game to set up the matchup against Norco.
The other top-ranked teams in the Arizona TOC are No. 8 Pacifica of Garden Grove (Calif.), No. 25 Saugus (Calif.) and No. 41 Canyon (Anaheim, Calif.).
