Nothing changed this week regarding the dynamic at the top of the FAB 50 national softball rankings with unbeatens Mission Viejo of California (the defending national champion) and Alexander Central of North Carolina both continuing to roll.

Similar to last year, however, a San Francisco Bay Area unbeaten team with a UCLA committed pitcher is pushing Mission Viejo for the No. 1 California ranking.

At this point of the season with three major tournaments already in its pocket, Mission Viejo is going to have to lose in a CIF Southern Section playoff game or lose more than once for the rest of the regular season to fall from No. 1 in California or the nation.

While Alexander Central is next in line nationally, the next California team in line is gaining momentum as well and that would be Pioneer of San Jose. The Mustangs are in the same position at this point of the season as Amador Valley of Pleasanton was last season.

In that race, an Amador team led by current UCLA freshman Johanna Grauer completed a perfect season but nonetheless was No. 2 behind Mission Viejo (which lost a somewhat meaningless final regular season contest) in the final state and national rankings. This time, Pioneer could do the same with sophomore UCLA committed pitcher Holly Azevedo.
