Wednesday evening, one of the top pitchers in the nation finalized where she’ll be going to college this fall.

Meghan King, the senior standout who led St. Thomas Aquinas High (Ft. Lauderdale, Fla.) to back-to-back Class 7A state titles and is rated as the No. 25 player in the Class of 2014, told the coaches at Florida State that she would be a Seminole.

“I told them about an hour ago,” she told StudentSportsSoftball.com at 10 pm EST.

What makes this commitment somewhat unusual is that King, the Gatorade State Player of the Year, had signed a Letter of Intent with Maryland in the fall and had to get released from the school to stay within the Sunshine State.

“I applied for a release about three months ago by going through the athletic director, “ the pitcher revealed. “As that was happening, the coaching staff found out.”

How did the Terrapins take the news?

“The entire program was awesome throughout the process,” she continued. “They were completely accommodating and there were no strings attached—nowhere I couldn’t go. They were very understanding and helpful and sat down with me to understand the situation and I couldn’t be more thankful. I only wish them the very best in the future.”

Meghan says there were three main factors that led to her wanting to go through the recruiting process again.

“It came down to a personal decision and a desire to be closer to home,” she explains. “I fell in love with Florida State from the start; it’s a great location and only about six hours from home.”

“Also, I want to major in nursing and when I talked to the FSU coaches and strength and conditioning coach they were helpful in telling me how I can purse a nursing degree.”

“The other main factor was FSU players have fun with each other on and off the field and a main thing I was looking for was a family atmosphere like they have.”

The left-handed pitcher also had offers from Alabama, Auburn, North Carolina State, Georgia Tech and Villanova with strong interest from Pitt and Rutgers as well.

Ironically, both Maryland and Florida State are currently in the ACC together but that will change in a few months when the Terrapins start playing in the Big Ten this fall.

King had a dominating senior campaign as she went 20-2 with a 0.25 ERA and pitched 15 shutouts, three no-hitters and a perfect game.

A strong student as well, she graduated with a 3.99 GPA and is currently in New Jersey for the Team NJ Classic, although her game today was rained out.
