Archives: October verbals… 8 years ago (10/2)

For this Throwback Thursday pull from the archives, I’m going back to this week eight years ago–specifically to October 6, 2006–and the Daily Update from that day when I reported that a pretty good Florida pitcher was headed to the SEC… you’ll enjoy seeing who it was and let’s just say, Spoiler Alert, that she had a fairly decent college career!

DAILY UPDATE: 10/6/06:

Rabbit season? Duck season? Nope, it’s Verbal season, as we add a few more to this week’s total of 50 (which we list) as well as update our Sister Act list, key events before Thanksgiving and a state-record pitching performance in the Oklahoma playoffs by recent commit Jordan Kinard.

VERBALS

Kelsi Dunne, an Alabama commit.
Kelsi Dunne, an Alabama commit.

*** According to Brent Hazzard of Team FLA, P/1B Kelsi Dunne, an all-state player and the Central Florida Player of the Year (by Orlando Sentinel), has committed to Alabama.

As a junior, Dunne set a Florida state single-game record with 38 strikeouts in a 17-inning playoff game in which she didn’t allow her first hit until the 16th inning.

She compiled a 26-5 record and led Spruce Creek to the Class 6A title game where the Hawks fell to Palm Beach Gardens, 3-1.

Still, Dunne had a spectacular season striking in 461, second all-time in Sunshine State softball history.

*** Speaking of marathon games, Jordan Kinard, who we recently profiled as a commit to Tulsa, had a “Game of a Lifetime” performance yesterday (Thursday) as she struck out 31 in 17 innings to lead her team, Mannford (Okla.) to a first round playoff win over Elgin, 3-1, in the Class 4A State Tournament.

Kinard’s 31 K’s set a new Oklahoma state record as she struck out 11 of the first 12 batters she faced. Humble and gracious, she told the Tulsa World: “The defense was awesome, they made huge plays behind me. I got ahead (in the count) and was able to give them the junk pitches.’

Playing in Oklahoma City as the ASA Hall of Fame Stadium, the Tulsa verbal was matched inning by inning by Elgin pitcher Jordan Simmons who struck out 16.

If the Pirates beat Piedmont on Friday, they’ll play in the championship game Saturday at 1 pm CST.

*** Jeff Glackler, the Head Softball Coach with the Minnesota Peppers (18U) writes: Pitcher Brynne Dordel committed to Drake University last weekend. She is a senior at Chaska High School and was on the all-state and all-metro teams last spring. She was 28-5 last summer with the Peppers with a 0.20 ERA.

***Dana Goguen, a P/1B with Team Arizona-Shepherd has given a verbal to Phoenix College. She plays her high school ball at Shadow Mountain in Phoenix.

*** Brant Beddow of the So Cal Breakers writes to tell us about Kelly & Mari Majam saying, Kelly is an ‘08 grad and probably the best all around player in San Diego. Mari is a 2010. Kelly hit over 400 in 200+ AB last year and was 23-9 in the circle. Mari hit a three-run homer in her secnd at bat at the gold level. Their older sister Allison (now a freshman at Colorado State) was a power hitting shortstop for us the last two seasons.”

*** Gerry Quinn of the Illinois Chill writes: “We don’t have any sisters currently playing together. However, we do have several (three) little sisters whose big sisters just finished playing for us and are now playing college softball:”

Chill Gold Class of 2005— Erin Quinn, Smith College

Chill Gold Class of 2006— Christine McGivney, U. of Maine
Chill Gold Class of 2009— Kate McGivney

Chill Gold Class of 2006— Jill Jozefowicz, EasternMichigan
Chill Gold Class of 2010— Lindsey Jozefowicz

*** In the same vein, Gerry Glasco of the Southern Force (Ill.) writes:

We have a younger sister, Kaley Coonce, whose older sister Kacey batted leadoff for the Southern Force in 2004 when we won the ASA Gold Nationals. Kaley is a P/1B and her older sister Kacey (now at the Univ. of Georgia) was a P/2B.

Kaley is the most talented young player we have ever had in our program. Although elgible to play ASA 14U again next summer, she played 18U Gold this past summer with us and had wins pitching against such top teams as Virginia Shamrocks and the Arizona Suncats.

Kaley is an outstanding hitter who batted over .350 during our T-17th finish at ASA Gold Nationals this past summer.

We look forward to having her play for us for 5 more years!
