Janell Wheaton is a freshman at the Univ. of Florida and this spring will take the field for the National Champion Gators.

She’s used to winning, too: Janell was on the OC Batbusters-Haning/Stith team that won the PGF 18U Premier Nationals this summer and in the previous two years also won a title at the 2012 PGF Nationals (16U) and came in second at 18U as well in 2013.

On the high school side, the catcher/infielder was a California All-State selection after she hit over .600 her last three years for her San Dimas High (Calif.) team.

We caught up with Janell, who was rated as the No. 15 player in the Full Count Softball 2014 Hot 100, over the holidays as she was working out with her club coach, Mike Stith, at his facility in Anaheim, Calif.

I asked the college player about comparing club ball to college, what she sees now that she’s part of the Florida program as to what makes the Gators an elite program, and what she wants to work on in 2015.
