Florida No. 1 in ESPN/USA Softball poll (4/14)

Change continues at the No. 1 spot atop the ESPN.com/USA Softball Collegiate Top 25 Poll, as the Florida Gators (39-4, 10-4 SEC) reclaim the top spot.

This marks the sixth week this season the Gators have been voted No.1 as they captured nine-of-20 first place votes, while Oregon (35-5, 13-2 Pac-12) garnered eight first-place votes, LSU (38-5, 11-4 SEC) nabbed two first-place votes and Oklahoma  (36-5, 9-0 Big 12) collected the remaining first-place vote.

Florida returns to the No.1 spot for the first time since Week 5 after going 3-0 this past week against Top 25 teams. The Gators traveled to Tallahassee, Fla. for a mid-week stand-alone showdown against in-state rival and then-No. 10 Florida State (34-11, 14-3 ACC).

Senior Bailey Castro (Pembroke Pines, Fla.) hit two solo home runs to help secure the 5-1 victory. Florida returned home to host then-No. 15 Kentucky (27-13, 4-10 SEC).

In front of the largest home crowd in program history, the Gators won game one 1-0 in a pitchers’ duel behind the arm of Lauren Haeger (Peoria, Ariz.). In game two, Florida secured their fourth consecutive SEC Conference series with a 6-3 victory.  After putting on a show from the circle in game one, Haegar blasted a three-run blast, which tied the Florida and SEC career home run records.

The Ducks stood pat in the No. 2 spot despite sweeping then-No. 19 Arizona State (27-15, 5-6 Pac-12). The Ducks grabbed game one of the series 7-0 behind the dominant pitching of Cheridan Hawkins (Anderson, Calif.), who only gave up two hits. The Ducks bats stayed hot in game two, securing a 12-3 (six inning) victory with eight different athletes collecting at least one RBI in the game. The Ducks withheld a late rally by the Sun Devils in the final game of the series, inching out a 4-3 win.

2015 USA Women’s National Team member Janelle Lindvall (Stevenson Ranch, Calif.) was dominant in the weekend series, bringing in six RBI on five hits. The series sweep gave Oregon their first over Arizona State since 1989.

LSU was on the road in each game last week, starting with a stand-alone midweek game against Mississippi State.  Although they outhit the Bulldogs, the Tigers couldn’t overcome the Bulldogs, falling 9-4 in the upset loss.  LSU continued their road trip to Knoxville, Tenn. for a weekend series against then-No. 14 Tennessee (30-11, 8-7 SEC).

The Tigers opened the series with a 5-1 victory as Savanna Jaquish (Highland, Calif.) knocked in two home runs. LSU clinched game two of the series with a 7-4 win as the Tigers claimed their first ever series victory in Knoxville in program history. The Volunteers won the final game of the series 8-5 to avoid the sweep.

Michigan (37-6, 10-2 Big 10) continues to hang onto the No. 4 spot for the sixth straight week after going 4-0 this week. The Wolverines dominated Eastern Michigan 11-1 (five inning) before traveling to Piscataway, N.J. for a three game series against Big 10 foe Rutgers.

Michigan outscored the Scarlet Knights 39-3, with two games being decided via run-rule. The Wolverines will travel across the state to East Lansing, Mich. for a stand-alone game against rival Michigan State before hosting a three-game Big 10 series against Indiana.

Holding onto the No. 5 spot is Oklahoma who posted a 10-1 (five inning) win over Arkansas before traveling to Austin, Texas to take on Red River rival Texas in a Big 12 series. The Sooners took all three games of the series, outscoring the Longhorns 15-1 to keep the No. 1 spot in the Big 12 Conference.

Freshman Paige Parker (Independence, Mo.) put her mark on the rivalry, not allowing a single run in over 16 innings of pitching, while striking out 21 batters. The Sooners will be challenged this weekend with a three-game series against No. 14 Baylor (29-9, 5-1 Big 12).

Rounding out the Top 10:

  • Auburn (40-6, 12-3 SEC) remains at No. 6 this week after posting a 3-1 week, including a series win at No. 23 Texas A&M (32-12, 8-7 SEC);
  • Alabama (31-9, 10-5 SEC) hangs onto the No. 7 spot after posting two victories against unranked teams by run-rule;
  • UCLA (35-8, 9-3 Pac-12) remains at No. 8 this week after going 4-0 with all games decided by run-rule;
  • Louisiana-Lafayette (32-5, 15-3 Sun Belt) stands pat at No. 9 after posting two wins against then-No. 13 Baylor;
  • Minnesota (33-7, 9-3 Big 10) enters the Top 10 for the first time this season after winning a series against Big 10 foe Northwestern.

Making the biggest jump in the polls this week are both Florida and No. 22 South Alabama (31-7, 14-3 Sun Belt), who each rose two spots from last week’s poll while LSU and Arizona State each fell two spots in the poll this week.

Joining the Top 25 this week is No. 25 Notre Dame (32-11, 13-5 ACC) while last week’s No. 22 Kansas (33-7, 4-5 Big 12) fell out of the poll after dropping a series at home against unranked Texas Tech.
