All-American charged with theft, misses title game (6/6)

The Columbus Dispatch reported today that pitcher Taran Alvelo, the All-American pitcher from Bloom Carroll (Carroll, Ohio) who has set several Ohio high school pitching records including career strikeouts, was accused Thursday of theft and shoplifting.
The senior, who has signed with the Univ. of Washington, subsequently missed today’s Ohio Div. III state championship and her team lost to Warren Champion 4-0, which won its sixth state title.
Junior McKenna Coffman pitched in Alvelo’s absence and had a solid game as she struck out 10 and allowed just two earned runs in the loss.

LANCASTER, Ohio — The star pitcher for the Bloom-Carroll softball team has been charged with theft, accused of shoplifting jewelry and a pair of tennis shoes from a department store.
Lancaster police arrested and charged Taran M. Alvelo with the first-degree misdemeanor on Thursday night at the Kohl’s at Ety Pointe Drive.
Alvelo, 18, of Carroll, was issued a summons and was ordered to appear in Fairfield County Municipal Court on Tuesday.
The senior has led the Bulldogs to a fourth state championship game, having pitched a one-hitter in a 10-0 victory over Wheelersburg in a Division III semifinal in Akron on Thursday morning. Today, the Bulldogs hope to match the title they won in 2013. They lost in 2012 and 2014.
Alvelo, a two-time Dispatch All-Metro player of the year who has signed to play at Washington, did not travel on the team bus back to Akron yesterday. If she does not pitch in the title game, junior McKenna Coffman likely will take the mound. Coffman made several appearances as Alvelo’s backup this season.
Alvelo did not return a message seeking comment. Coach Choc Woods would not address Alvelo’s status for the championship game, saying “it’s a private matter involving a student-athlete.” Athletic director Chad Little did not return a message seeking comment.
Her father, former Bloom-Carroll softball coach Aaron A. Alvelo, pleaded not guilty last month to a felony theft charge in Fairfield County Common Pleas Court.
Mr. Alvelo, 43, resigned as coach in March after Little filed a complaint with the Carroll Police Department. The complaint said that $5,881 in cash from team fundraisers went missing after it had been turned over to the coach.
