FloSoftball: How fun was it to be a Michigan signee and follow the Wolverines to the final game of the World Series?
Alex Sobczak: Honestly, I didn't leave my couch! Our family had popcorn and a bunch of drinks and we just stayed in and watched all three games. We were screaming and getting into it, it felt like I was on the field with the Michigan players! I was heartbroken that last game--I wanted them to win so bad.
FS: Did you grow up a Michigan fan? And was their any chance you'd go anywhere else?
AS: I grew up around Michigan softball, it was all I knew, but when I was a freshman I did look at other schools. None compared to Michigan academically, though; it's one of the top schools and they compete every year for a national championship in softball. I also (Michigan's) Alumni Field and I just wanted to continue my softball career there.
FS: You live 45 minutes away from the Wolverine campus, isn't that too close to home as mom and dad can pop in unannounced?
AS: It's always going to be too close--if I was a couple states over, it would still be too close! (laughs) But it does allow me to have free laundry done on the weekends!
FS: Talk about the charity you started called "Dodge for a Cause." What was it for and how has it gone?
AS: My sophomore year I felt like I wasn't doing enough for my community and one area I'm really passionate about is kids and their schooling. In the U.S., it's easy to take getting an education for granted so when I heard about a community in South Africa that didn't have enough food, let alone young kids getting an education, I thought that having a dodgeball tournament would help raise money to feed and educate the young people there. It was a lot of fun and was for a great cause.
FS: You're going into pre-med in Ann Arbor… do you know what field of medicine you might want to go into?
AS: I hope to become a PA (Physician's Assistant) and maybe get a microbiology major and a minor in French.
FS: Four years you had a scary incident; tell us about the accident and how it changed you…
AS: I was out jogging to get some conditioning in at dusk and I didn't see a car coming. It hit me about 30-40 miles per hour and I hit the hood and was knocked into a ditch. I wasn't totally unconscious, but I was pretty out of it. I remember thinking that I was going to be paralyzed. All the skin on my back was gone and my scalp was split open, but fortunately I didn't break a single bone. It made me look at life and softball differently--I was afraid I'd never be able to play again. It opened my eyes to what I have and to appreciate every at bat and not stress out as much at school, softball or anything really.
FS: Your boyfriend, Nick Plummer, was Mr. Baseball this year in Michigan and you were Miss Softball… gotta ask: who's the better player?
AS: Well, Nick got drafted in the 1st round by the Cardinals, the 23rd pick overall and he got a $2.1 million signing bonus but I think we're pretty even overall (laughs) He's a lot quicker around the bases, but I think I'd give him a run for his money at the plate!
FS: We hear you do a mean turkey imitation, how do you find out you have that talent?
AS: One of the girls on my old team taught me how to do it. I'll do it to rally a team and to get everyone cheering and fired up, but I'm not going to do it now!
FS: Any hidden talents?
AS: I've played the piano since I was in pre-school and I do recitals every year, it's been probably 14 years.
FS: Finally what's something that people would be surprised to learn about you?
AS: Many people don't know that I want to take a mission trip and study abroad in South Africa to help others. That's more important to me than any money I could make.
