Nebraska Softball Schedule 2024: What to Know

It could be argued that no one in college softball had a better offseason than Nebraska. Mainly because of one program-changing player.

Nebraska isn’t exactly a nobody in the sport, having made the Women’s College World Series multiple times under a coach who has won over 1,000 games, but no one can dispute that the program’s fortunes were completely changed with the offseason arrival of one of the most established names in the sport today—Jordy Bahl.

Softball in Lincoln is poppin’, and though at times it can feel harder than ever to break out and be one of the best of the best teams in college softball, the Huskers could buck the trend in a dramatic way in 2024.

Here’s a look at all you need to know about Nebraska softball in advance of the 2024 season.

How Did Nebraska Softball Do In 2023?

It was a fine 2023 season for the Huskers as they came off their first Big Ten Conference tournament championship in 2022, but Nebraska was unable to repeat that success and finished fourth in the league.

Despite falling short, the Cornhuskers’ regular-season resume (which included victories over Texas A&M and Arizona, among others) was enough to seal a spot in the NCAA Tournament for the second straight year.

Nebraska was sent to the Stillwater Regional, and though it made the final after losing its first game in the bracket, host and No. 6 seed Oklahoma State needed just one game (a 5-2 Cowgirls win) to eliminate the Huskers and move on to the super-regional round.

Nebraska finished the season 36-22 overall and as the second-best hitting team in the Big Ten, going .308 from the plate as a unit, finishing behind Indiana’s .311.

Who Coaches Nebraska Softball?

Rhonda Revelle is entering her 31st season coaching her alma mater.

The Huskers’ winningest coach in any sport, Revelle was a player on Nebraska’s first Women’s College World Series team in 1982. She has helped the Huskers back there three more times as a coach (1998, 2002 and 2013), making her the one of the few people in the sport to make it to the WCWS as both a player and a coach.

Over two-thirds of Revelle’s seasons at the helm (21 of 30) in Lincoln have ended with Nebraska playing in the NCAA Tournament, and she has four regular-season conference championships on her resume: three from the Huskers’ time in the Big 12 Conference (1998, 2001 and 2004) and one as a member of the Big Ten (2014).

Has Nebraska Ever Won The Women’s College World Series?

No, Nebraska has never won the Women’s College World Series, coming up empty across eight trips in the program’s history.

The closest the Huskers have ever gotten to winning a national championship was in 1985, when they finished as the runner-up to UCLA. Unfortunately, Nebraska’s appearance was later vacated by the NCAA due to infractions with two ineligible student-athletes.

Notable Returning Players

Billie Andrews, INF

The Big Ten’s top returning home-run hitter hails from a hometown less than an hour outside of Lincoln.

With 43 career home runs, the senior needs 12 this season to surpass former All-American catcher Taylor Edwards as the program’s all-time leader in long bombs, and the shortstop is well on pace to do so with a productive 2024 campaign. She had 20 and 16 homers over her past two seasons.

Though Andrews’ power did take a slight dip from her stellar sophomore season in 2022, when she finished in the top 15 nationally in home runs and even had a blast over the fence in five consecutive games at one point, it was more than enough to keep her reputation going as one of the Big Ten’s most feared sluggers—plus, her average was a career-high .354, too.

Katelyn Caneda, INF

Had it not been for former Indiana star Taryn Kern (now at Stanford following an offseason transfer) lighting up the league in a record-breaking season that saw her win both the Big Ten’s Freshman and Player of the Year Awards, Caneda likely would’ve been the front-runner for the league’s top freshman after the season she had for the Huskers.

The Californian quickly became a star at second base for Nebraska, starting every game and finishing as the team’s leader in batting average at .366 and the Big Ten’s only player a year ago to earn a unique tripleheader of accolades—being an All-Big Ten first-team and part of the All-Freshman and All-Defensive teams.

Notable Newcomers

Jordy Bahl, RHP/UTL

Duh. Bahl already has built one of the most stacked pitching resumes in college softball history, going 44-2 over the past two seasons as the ace on two of the greatest, most dominant teams ever seen in the sport—Oklahoma in 2022 and 2023.

Widely considered to be college softball’s best active pitcher, Bahl’s announcement that she was transferring from the Sooners to her home state’s flagship program shortly after OU won its third consecutive national championship sent shockwaves through the sport and skyrocketed interest in Nebraska softball overnight, with requests for season tickets surging from under 30 to over 2,100 in the days after her move was official, per The Athletic.

Bahl, a two-time NFCA first-team All-American and the 2023 WCWS Most Outstanding Player, is the type of talent that turns a good team into a great one, and the Huskers’ expectations have unquestionably been heightened since her arrival.

Peyton Cody, C/UTL

Though Bahl’s transfer to Lincoln was the one that made waves on a national stage and may help get Nebraska back to Oklahoma City, Cody’s decision to play for the Huskers this season as a sixth-year graduate transfer from St. John’s may give the program some crucial veteran experience and leadership if it does start making a deep postseason run.

A former BIG EAST Co-Freshman of the Year with the Red Storm, Cody finished her career at St. John’s with a .316 average across 139 starts, with 20 home runs and 100 RBIs in all.

The COVID-impacted 2020 season and a knee injury in 2022 gave Cody some extra eligibility, and though she’s a natural backstop, Revelle noted in a school release that Cody has some flexibility to play multiple positions and could be utilized as a weapon in the lineup in numerous different ways for the Huskers this season.
