Thanks to a pair of hits, a pair of walks and a pair of hit batters, Oklahoma Athletics-Madden took advantage and scored all five runs in the third inning.

It was more than enough for Janie Worthington, who threw a two-hit complete game shut out Indiana Magic, 5-0, in the fourth round of the winner's bracket at the PGF 16U Premier Nationals on Wednesday evening at Fountain Valley Sports Complex in Fountain Valley, CA.

The Oklahoma Athletics take on Texas Bombers-Jones, a 7-4 winner over Beverly Bandits DeMarini-Helbling, on Thursday at 2:45 p.m.

“This win took teamwork,” Worthington said. “It took communication. We play as a team and have fun. That’s when we find out that we play a lot better when we are relaxed. We didn’t that much in the third inning. I got hit and got a bruise on the elbow, but all I could think about is that it will be a run. I kept it going.”

The North Texas commit struck out nine, while only giving up a pair of hits to Indiana-commit Macy Montgomery.

The OK Athletics got the top of the third inning going with a single and a walk, which took Magic pitcher Alexis Rudd out of the game. It was just the beginning for the Athletics with Tennessee-commit Amber Linton in the circle.

Korbyn Skipworth singled to right field to send Jenna Gibson home. A sacrifice groundout from Rylan Dooner sent Sidney McLaughlin home for the Athletics.

Following back-to-back hit batters, the Athletics scored another run, this time on a walk that sent Skipworth home.

An infield error off the bat of Noa Dodson sent Shannon Purcell and Grace Anderson home for the Athletics' fifth run.

The Athletics batted around in the third inning.

“We just had to make it happen,” Athletics coach Mike Madden said.

“Everything is even here and people that make mistakes usually lose. We kept the mistakes to a minimum. We persevere and we were strong. That third inning was a big sigh of relief. It was huge. I always said if we can get Janie five runs, we are in pretty good shape.”

The Magic couldn’t recover following the five-run inning from the Athletics as Worthington retired 14 batters in a row after a first-inning single from Montgomery, who ended that streak in the sixth inning with another single. Worthington retired the final five batters to complete the shutout victory.

“We only had two hits,” Magic coach James Rudd said. “We had one inning where we didn’t make the pitches and they made the hits. That’s a good team. We just have to come back and focus for tomorrow.”

The Magic return to the field on Thursday at 12:30 p.m. with the hopes of playing a second game on Thursday and potentially four games on Friday to get to the finals in the double-elimination tournament.

“It’s going to take all of us,” Rudd said. “We have three good pitchers and it is going to take all three to get us through that road of six games, but all we are going to do is focus on one game at a time. We have to figure out what we are going to do in that game to get to the next one.”

Gibson, Skipworth and Hannah Morales each got a hit for the Athletics.

“We just have to focus on our game,” Worthington said. “It’s softball and anybody it beatable if you try your hardest and come out with your best attitude.”
