USA Undefeated & The Netherlands Edge Out Chinese Taipei At WBSC
USA undefeated & the Netherlands edge out Chinese Taipei at the World Softball Championship.
The Netherlands won their second game of the tournament in a thriller, defeating Chinese Taipei, 6-5. The European champions scored the winning run in the bottom of the seventh on a fielding error by second base Feng-Chen Lin.
Chinese Taipei scored in the top of the first on an RBI double by Yi-Ting Yang that went all over the third base line. Netherlands starter Eva Voortman retired the first two batters she faced, but then walked Miao-Yi Chen and surrendered a single to Szu-Shih Li, before Yang’s double. Chinese Taipei loaded the bases with another walk, but the lefty avoided more damage with a grounder to third base.
One inning later Voortman struggled with her control and surrendered three consecutive walks to open the inning. Head Coach Rosselini Francisca made a pitching change, sending Rebecca Soumeru to the circle, but the reliever served a 2-RBI single to Yi Yen to make it 3-0, with runners on the corners and still no outs. After that, Chen hit the ball deep to center field for a sac fly,
In the bottom of the third Netherlands tied the game with a four-run rally. Soclaina Van Gurp started it with a leadoff homer, and Maxime Van Dalen followed with a single through the middle. An-Ju Chiu replaced Chia-Chen Tsai in the circle, but she allowed two more singles to load the bases, and two outs later Dinet Oosting hit a single between third and shortstop to produce two more, while the tying game scored on a throwing error in the same play.
The Netherlands had a big chance to take the lead in the score in the bottom of the fifth with bases loaded and one out, but they couldn’t capitalize with a grounder and a strikeout, stranding three runners.
Chinese Taipei took the lead in the top of the sixth with a sacrifice fly to center field by Li, to plate Yi Yeng, who had reached with an infield single.
Van Gurp doubled to center field, Van Dalen followed with a single, to put runners on the corners, and Damishah Charles hit a single to center field to tie the game at 5.
In the top of the seventh Feng-Chen Lin hit an opposite-field single to leadoff the inning, and advanced with a sac bunt by Yi-Hsuan Su. But Soumeru escaped with an out at home plate on a grounder and a fly to right field.
In the bottom of the seventh Su-Hua Lin retired the first two outs, but then Virginie Anneveld and Laura Wissink hit back to back singles, to put the potential winning run at second base.
Van Gurp, who had batted 3 for 3 for the game, too her at-bat, and hit a grounder to second base, but Feng-Chen Lin couldn’t field the ball, allowing Van Gurp to reach first, and most importantly Anneveld to score from second to end the game.
Both teams move now to 2-3 in the standings. Tomorrow the European champions will face Mexico at 12:30, and Chinese Taipei will play the Philippines at the same time.
