Corona Angels & Sorcerer Schroll Advance To PGF 14U Premier Title Game
Corona Angels Tyson & Sorcerer Schroll advance to PGF 14U Premier title game by beating Mizuno Storm and Hotshots Nelson.
Bill Schroll's Sorcerer had to fight its way through the loser's bracket and Marty Tyson's Corona Angels had a wild finish to reach the PGF 14U Premier national championship game on Friday at Huntington Beach Sports Complex.
The finals on Saturday at 3 PM at Deanna Manning Stadium at Bill Barber Park in Irvine will feature a rematch between Sorcerer and the Corona Angels, who are in the finals for the first time since winning a PGF 14U Premier national championship in 2014.
PGF 14U Premier Finals | How To Watch
Oregon-commit Paige Sinicki had a huge day to help the Corona Angels get to the national title game, going 5 for 8 with a double, a homer, three runs and seven RBI in victories over Sorcerer, 8-3, and Mizuno Storm-Mathis, 6-5.
"As long as we play as a team," Sinicki said, "we got this."
Sinicki went 3 for 4 with a double, two runs and four RBI as the Corona Angels knocked Sorcerer into the loser's bracket with the fifth-round victory.
Sinicki went 2 for 4 with a three-run blast to give the Corona Angels a 6-3 lead over the Storm in the top of the seventh.
Then the Corona Angels had to sweat out the final three outs in the bottom of the seventh with Arizona State-commit Kylee Magee on the hill. Rylee Holtorf led off the inning with a bunt single before Bridget Donahey drilled a two-out, two-run shot to center field to cut the Corona Angels lead to 6-5. Magee gave up a walk before striking out Jade Berry to end the game and punch the Angels' ticket to the championship game.
"I just had to help my team out," Magee said. "She (Sinicki) did her job and gave me some runs. I just had to shut them down.
"It feels really good. We worked so hard for this. Tomorrow, we just gotta pull through."
Sorcerers Take Two
After getting roughed up by the Corona Angels, right-hander Annabel Teperson recorded three consecutive complete game victories to get the Sorcerer organization to its first PGF national title game.
"It's really great. Everyone is so excited," Teperson said. "I'm sure Coach Bill is super excited and it's going to be great. We're all so happy."
Olivia Silvestre went 4 for 5 with two runs and an RBI, Tai Wilson went 4 for 5 with two runs, Caroline Allman went 2 for 4 with a run and two RBI, UCLA-commit Caitlyn Newburn and Teperson both drove in two runs and Jenissa Conway went 2 for 3 with a run and two RBI to lift Sorcerer over Athletics-Mercado/Greg in the loser's bracket.
The victory got Sorcerer into the semifinals where it faced highly-touted Diamond Sports Hotshots-Nelson. Sorcerer needed to beat the Hotshots twice to get to the finals and it did so with a 3-2 win in the first game and a 4-2 victory in the second game.
"We knew that it was going to be hard, but we were ready for it," Teperson said. "We played our hardest and did all that we could and we really gave it our all."
Sorcerer rallied for two runs in the bottom of the seventh to get a walk-off victory over the Hotshots in the first game. Allman drove in Alaana Panu with a one-out single to tie it, 2-2. With two outs and the bases loaded, Haley Painter hit a grounder to the 5/6 hole and the Hotshots third baseman and shortstop got into a slight collision, allowing Wilson to score the winning run.
Teperson threw her best game of the day in the second game against the Hotshots, using her change-up to great effect to hold the Hotshots to five hits and two runs.
With the game knotted, 1-1, Newburn had a two-run single during a three-run rally by Sorcerer in the top of the fifth to make it 4-1. That was more than enough for Sorcerer with the way Teperson was pitching.
