College Softball Weekly Recap: Top 8 Seeds All Advance To WCWS
College Softball Weekly Recap: Top 8 Seeds All Advance To WCWS
The aftermath of the NCAA softball super regionals, top 8 seeds advance to the Women's College World Series.
Welcome to the best time of the year, softball fans. The top seeds all survived and advanced from Super Regionals over the weekend—the first time that has happened since 2005—and the eight-team field for the Women’s College World Series is set. Oklahoma City awaits, but before we settle in for what will be a dizzying run to the national title, let’s review how we got there.
Here are the moments that brought the elite eight to the WCWS:
Jordan Matthews smashes two-out walk-off bomb to send Florida to OKC
Texas A&M was a strike away from beating Florida in Gainesville and earning a trip to Oklahoma City. Then Jordan Matthews hit the biggest dinger of her life off Trinity Harrington in the bottom of the seventh, lifting UF to a 5-3 victory:

As incredible of a moment as this was for the Gators, it was just as soul-crushing for the Aggies. A&M also relinquished a two-run seventh inning lead in the first game of the series, ultimately losing by allowing a Janell Wheaton walk-off walk with the bases loaded. Florida was the better team all season, but Texas A&M gave the Gators a heck of a battle at Supers. To see their season end like this was tough to watch.
Florida will play Georgia—a team the UF lost to twice during the regular season—in its opening WCWS game on Thursday.
After losing opener, Oregon bludgeons Kentucky en route to WCWS
The Ducks could’ve folded after a shocking 9-6 loss in Game 1 of their Super Regional matchup with Kentucky, just their second loss at home all season. Instead, No. 1-ranked Oregon came out swinging while playing two straight elimination games, as the Ducks pounded out 19 hits and 17 runs to slam the door on the Wildcats in Games 2 and 3.

For a do-or-die Game 3 with everything on the line, Oregon sure sucked the drama out of it quickly by scoring seven times in the bottom of second on its way to an 11-1 run-rule victory on Saturday. The big hit came off the mighty bat of DJ Sanders:

Is Oklahoma somehow a sleeper for OKC? Sooners dominate Supers
The two-time defending champs advanced to their 12th Women’s College World Series in school history by pounding Arkansas in their Super Regional. After allowing their first two runs of the NCAA tournament in Game 1 while still comfortably beating Arkansas 7-2, the Sooners got back to their shutout ways in the second game to punch their ticket. OU won 9-0 in Game 2 behind seven clean innings from Paige Parker.

Oklahoma may only be the No. 4 seed, but make no mistake—it should be the most feared team in OKC. The Sooners have outscored their opponents 40-2 in their five NCAA tournament games and look downright scary at the moment. They’ll play Washington on Thursday to kick off the WCWS.
Rachel Garcia’s arm, Madeline Jelenicki’s bat send Bruins to WCWS
Any potential drama between Pac-12 foes UCLA and Arizona was quickly stifled as the Bruins swept the Wildcats behind two dominant starts from ace Rachel Garcia. The senior Garcia struck out 18 over the two games while allowing just five hits. For the fourth straight year, UCLA is heading to the WCWS.

While Garcia was burning a hole in her catcher’s mitt, Madeline Jelenicki made sure her teammate had plenty of run support in Game 1. The senior whacked two homers to lead UCLA to a dominant 7-1 win. Oh, and of course Garcia herself couldn’t resist getting in on the action:

The Bruins will meet Florida State first in OKC.
Washington’s Game 1 walk-off keys sweep of Alabama
The Huskies appeared to be on their way to a frustrating loss in their Supers opener against Alabama on Friday, as Washington failed to capitalize on a couple scoring opportunities while trailing Bama 2-0. UW trailed 2-0 entering the bottom of the seventh before Sis Bates ripped a game-tying hit:

Then, Taylor Van Zee ended things in the ninth:

After all that drama, UW had no trouble dispatching of the Crimson Tide in Game 2, as the Huskies won 6-0 to advance to Oklahoma City. There they’ll meet Oklahoma first on Thursday.
Florida State survives LSU
After Florida State lost a tough one-run opener against LSU on Friday, things got wild from there for the Seminoles. In a game that featured a rain delay and 11 innings, FSU beat the Tigers 8-5 in a second tilt that lasted more than five hours. Fortunately for FSU, slugger Jessie Warren’s bat plays in all conditions:

Game 2 was just getting started at that point, however, as FSU finally took the lead for good by scoring three times in the top of the 11th. Carsyn Gordon had the big bomb:

Game 3 was much less dramatic, as FSU ace Kylee Hanson allowed just five hits while leading the Seminoles to a 3-1 win. The victory sent Florida State to its 10th WCWS in school history, where the Seminoles will play UCLA first up.
Cortni Emanuel’s big extra-inning dinger sends Georgia to Oklahoma City
How about this for clutch? Bulldogs senior Cortni Emanuel with the game-winning big fly for Georgia in the top of the eighth in Game 2:

Now Georgia gets a familiar foe in its first game in OKC: SEC champ Florida. During the regular season, the Bulldogs bested the Gators two out of three.
Arizona State sweeps South Carolina to advance to 12th WCWS
The Sun Devils used great pitching from G Juarez and Breanna Macha—and a whopping 21 hits over two games—to sweep South Carolina and book their trip to OKC for the first time since 2013.
