FloSoftball Freshman Player & Pitcher Of The Year Candidates
FloSoftball splits the Freshman Player of the Year candidates into two categories for fans to vote for the Player and Pitcher of the Year.
The college softball freshmen of 2018 are a talented bunch. So talented in fact that we decided to split up the Freshman Player of the Year award into two different categories: Freshman Player of the Year and Freshman Pitcher of the Year.
Freshman Player of the Year Candidates
Aaliyah Jordan, OF | UCLA
Sidelined by an ACL injury last season, Aaliyah Jordan has been lights out since her return and is currently leading UCLA in batting average (.475), doubles (14), RBIs (58), on-base percentage (.548), and slugging percentage (.799). Jordan earned her sixth Pac-12 Freshman of the Week honor after going 5 for 10 against Oklahoma State and South Dakota. Before joining the Bruins, Jordan was a standout on Marty Tyson’s Corona Angels and ranked No. 17 in the 2016 Hot 100.
Jocelyn Alo, DP | Oklahoma
On pace to chase Lauren Chamberlain’s career home run record, Jocelyn Alo is simply destroying the ball as a true freshman. Leading the country in home runs (23) and tied for fifth in RBIs (58) with Jordan, Alo recently broke a window of a van parked behind Marita Hynes Field in Norman, OK, with a homer. Her poise at the plate is an undeniable weapon on the Sooners' roster.
Freshman Pitcher of the Year Candidates
Meghan Beaubien, LHP | Michigan
Many softball fans questioned who would replace Megan Betsa for Michigan. Enter freshman Meghan Beaubien. The lefty pitcher has stunned opponents this season with her mix of offspeed pitches, striking out 222 victims so far. Ranked No. 5 in ERA (0.90), Beaubien is 29-3 this season and is holding opponents to a .127 batting average. Beaubien has collected accolades nearly every week and most recently no-hit Maryland in Big Ten play.
Mary Haff, RHP | Arkansas
Emerging as the Razorback ace, Mary Haff has embraced the title by holding a 1.34 ERA with a 21-4 record and 194 strikeouts. From Winter Haven, Florida, Haff was named top 50 in the Hot 100 after compiling 619 strikeouts for Lake Region High School.
Gabbie Plain, RHP | Washington
All the way from Sydney, Australia, Gabbie Plain is one of the top pitchers in the Pac with a 13-4 record and 1.22 ERA. Behind Player of the Year candidate Taran Alvelo, Plain recorded 126 strikeouts in 103 innings pitched.
