Rising Star: Brionna Warren Blazes Own Trail With Help Of NFL Dad

Living up to your parent's professional legacy can be impossible, especially when your father was an All-Pro player in the NFL and won three Super Bowls with the New England Patriots. But Brionna Warren is writing her own history in softball as one of the top recruits in the 2020 class.

Smooth and graceful in the outfield and dynamic on offense, she fell into softball by accident. Her mother Kesha meant to sign Bre up for soccer but missed the registration deadline.

Every spring the family would spend their time in Texas where she played a season of Little League in Bryan. Soon after, Kesha signed Bre and her sister up with the Parker Hawks Rec ball league.

It didn't take long for a local travel coach to take notice of Bre's talent and ask the family if they would consider signing Bre up for travel ball. Initially, Kesha and Ty were against the idea but eventually they agreed.

Softball didn't come easy. A true righty, she learned to bat left-handed.

"Becoming a left-handed hitter was so hard for me!," Bre said. "I was so new to the game so I had mechanics to fix on my natural swing. I overcame those challenges by taking extra cuts and being the last one to leave practice. It was frustrating most times because I would strikeout more times than I would put the ball in play. There were times I wouldn't even be in the batting lineup. My dad kept saying, 'Bre, just trust the process -- the cream always rises to the top!'"

Credit Warren's mother and father for her work ethic and humble approach to sticking to the process. Both of her parent's were voted "most athletic" in high school. Ty Warren had an exceptional career as a defensive lineman for Texas A&M, the New England Patriots, and the Denver Broncos. Playing 10 years in the NFL, he won three Super Bowls and was All-Pro.

Kesha was a baller too. She was a star basketball and volleyball player but decided to pursue speech communication instead of athletics.

Despite living in Massachusetts and Denver, Texas was truly home for the Warren family. So having experienced living in different states, choosing the right school for Bre proved to be challenging. She went on unofficial visits to SEC, Big 12, ACC, and AAC schools.

"Recruiting was very stressful to me because you're trying make a lifetime decision and you don't want to make the wrong choice," she said. "But I had my family and God to help me go through the whole process and I'm truly blessed to say I am going where I feel I belong."

Ultimately, Texas A&M won her heart, and she verbally committed as a high school freshman.

"I chose Texas A&M because it has always felt like home since I could remember. Growing up around other Aggies and watching Aggie sports helped in my decision. It always felt like a big family and I have to give credit to coach Evans as she has created such a welcoming environment."

Bre will be participating in USA Elite Select 30 All-American Camp LIVE on FloSoftball August 20.

Hometown: College Station, TX

Positions: Center Field or "where the team needs me"

Club: Diamond Sports Hotshots Dumezich

High School: College Station High School

Grad Year: 2020

Current School: College Station High School

College: Texas A&M

Top Accomplishments: First team all-district 18-5A, offensive MVP of varsity as a freshman, and all academic district 18-5A. Ranked No. 82 FloSoftball Hot 100 player in the class of 2020.

Hitting Approach: Tara Archibald gives me hitting lessons and going into the summer she stressed to me, "To have a plan when I get to the plate!" The main thing was me starting to understand the game and knowing the situation. Tara also spoke to me about different situations and the different effects of my swing. So I actually worked on knowing what I was going to do (slap, bunt, bounce, or hit away) before the pitch was even thrown. I used to HATE change-ups, but since I now have a plan before the pitch, my mind isn't guessing and I can sit back and see the ball.

What is the strongest part of your softball game and why?

I take pride in playing defense and running bases. When I was younger the outfield was the last place a kid wanted to be. It was almost like going to "timeout," but now I get a TON of action in the outfield. I would also say my passion and effort are my strengths.

What was the highlight of your summer and why?

PGF because it was so exciting competing against top teams in the nation. Nothing is better than playing the best. And nothing feels better than beating the best.

What's your favorite softball memory? Why?

My favorite softball memory is my first home run. I had worked so hard to get to that moment and when I got it, it made me so happy!

Favorite quote or mantra you live by: "Things aren't given, they are earned…"

Best advice you've been given: My dad tells my sisters and I this at least once a week: "There is always someone trying to get better, and working harder than you. So never think you are the best! While you're sleeping, someone is creeping."

If you could spend the weekend with anyone doing anything anywhere in the world, what would you do? I would like to visit a less fortunate country on a mission trip.
