Rising Star: 2021 MIF Rylee Holtorf Keeps Getting Better

Rylee Holtorf will be a name you will definitely see in the 2021 Hot 100. The middle infielder from Peoria, Arizona went on unofficial visits to Oklahoma, Arizona, GCU, but eventually committed to Washington before the early recruiting rule change.

"I think that it's crazy to think that as an eighth-grader that I'm already getting looked at by colleges," Rylee said. "I've thought about it (early recruiting), but it's kind of normal right now. I've grown up with this so I haven't known anything different. It's overwhelming at points, but it's actually really cool."

Some parents worry that a verbal commitment puts too much pressure on young players. However, Holtorf said she has experienced the opposite during her recruitment.

"Not from the coaches that I've talked with," she said. "They've all been super cool about it and haven't pressured me to make a decision or pressured me to do anything. My parents haven't pressured me either. They've been there with me and helped me along the way."

When it comes to narrowing her top choices, Rylee is looking for the right mentorship in coaches, strong faith, and a city where she could see herself living even if softball wasn't in the picture.

Humility is the most important trait Rylee's parents have instilled in her ever since she could pick up a bat.

Her dad, Ronnie, was a baseball player at Grand Canyon University, and her mom was a pitcher at New Mexico State.

Ronnie has been Rylee's coach her entire life.

"I like having my dad as my coach," Rylee said. "He tells me how it is, and he doesn't sugarcoat it. All the little things he critiques me on makes me better as a player."

Like her mom, Rylee had a career as a pitcher, but it was short-lived. When she gave up pitching, Rylee said her mom "was (sad) but kind of relieved because some of the hitters were hitting the ball so far."

Rylee is absolutely devoted to the sport. Even when she's not practicing softball, she can still be found at the field coaching her younger siblings.

"I love being on the dirt," she said. "I love diving for balls. I love turning double plays. Talking with my infielders and talking with my pitchers."

Position: Middle Infield

College: Washington

What club coach Corey Mathis had to say about Holtorf: "Rylee was invited to the 2016 OnDeck June Jamboree and also Allister's National Elite Camp at Mt. SAC in 2016. Rylee hits for well for average and also possesses a powerful swing. She currently has 10 home runs in 126 at-bats. She has hovered above .500 all season. She is sure-handed in the middle infield with great hands, quick feet, and above average range and arm. And even with all of Rylee's athleticism on the softball field, I feel her greatest quality is her leadership. She owns the field when she's playing, and for me, it's like having another coach on the field. She should have a very exciting summer!"

What's your favorite part about softball? Being part of a team with girls who love the game as much as I do is really cool.

Favorite tournament: PGF Nationals.

Ultimate softball dream: Play at a DI school and to play in the College World Series and to win the World Series.

If you could describe your family in one word, what would it be? Busy. When I'm not playing, one of my siblings is playing so I'm always at the field. It's awesome because I like to coach. So they're all younger than me so I get to coach.

Do you have any softball superstitions or rituals? I pray and ignore the urge to pee before every game.

Dream vacation: Hawaii.

Favorite pump-up song: Anything "High School Musical."

Favorite softball moment: Winning the 12U Colorado Sparkler. We were the first Arizona team to win it.
