No. 22 Baylor Upsets No. 8 Washington At The Judi Garman Classic
FULLERTON, Calif. -- Baylor softball (17-3) continued on its hot streak, upsetting No. 7 Washington (15-3), 3-1, on the second day of competition in the Judi Garman Classic at Anderson Family Field.
The win for Baylor is the third-straight win over a top-20 opponent, sweeping yesterday's games with No. 20 Arizona State and No. 14 Michigan.
The Lady Bears also extended an 11-game winning streak, the highest in the Big 12 this season.
Kelsee Selman (9-2) worked another complete game winning effort, slinging all 7.0 frames. The senior allowed just five hits and one run, adding five strikeouts.
The Baylor bats came through in the clutch to break open yet another pitcher's duel, finally breaking through in the bottom of the fourth.
After a lead-off walk for Shelby Friudenberg, with Riley Browder pinch running, a sac bunt by Lindsey Cargill moved Browder into scoring position. A single by Maddison Kettler moved Browder to third, still with just one out.
Shelby McGlaun drove in the go-ahead run, skying a sac fly to deep right field, scoring Browder to put BU up, 1-0.
The Huskies answered back in the top of the fifth, drilling a solo home run to tie the game back at 1-1.
Flipping to the home half of the fifth, Jessie Scroggins got the rally started, reaching safely on a bunt single.
Kyla Walker followed up with a single through the left side of the infield, moving Scroggins into scoring position.
Ari Hawkins made it three-straight, laying down a bunt single, with an errant throw by the pitcher on the play easily scoring Scroggins.
A ground out by Friudenberg drove in Walker, adding another insurance run for Baylor, carrying a 3-1 lead through the back half of the contest, hanging on to win another top-25 game in dominant fashion.
HIGHLIGHTS
· Four BU hitters had multi-hit games, with Jessie Scroggins, Kyla Walker, Ari Hawkins, and Maddison Kettler each going 2-for-3.
· Over the last eight games, Kelsee Selman is 5-0 with six appearances, tossing three complete games in four starts over that stretch. The senior has allowed just two earned runs with 23 strikeouts to just five walks in 31.1 inning pitched over that span.
· In the team's four games against ranked opponents so far this season, Shelby Friudenberg has led the Baylor offense with a .462 average and four RBI.
