SALINAS, CALIF. -- It was a highly anticipated championship game in the 18U PGF Ultimate Challenge featuring two of the top teams representing two of the best both NorCal and SoCal has to offer.Sunday afternoon it was advantage NorCal.
The All American Sports Academy held off a game effort from the OC Batbusters Stith team for a 3-1 victory to capture the tournament title Sunday afternoon at the Salinas Sports Complex.
UCLA verbal commit Holly Azevedo got the victory for AASA.
Azevedo threw all seven innings striking out nine including the final batter of the game while allowing 10 hits, one run and walked only one.
Azevedo was happy that the team was able to get out of jams and keep the damage minimal despite the Batbusters getting 10 hits in the game.
The Batbusters sent the game-winning run to bat in the bottom of the seventh inning but Azevedo struck out fellow UCLA commit Collen Sullivan to end the game.The Batbusters in all stranded 10 runners in the game and left multiple runners on base in four different innings.
"The Batbusters are a great team," Azevedo said. "I don't think I was ever comfortable in the game because I know they are prone to coming back. It was go, go, go the whole time."
University of Oregon verbal commit Rachel Cid led AASA at the plate going 3-for-4 with two doubles, two RBIs and a run scored. Cid said with Azevedo in the circle it was important to get runs early.
Cid delivered an RBI double in the first and third inning. "Holly is a great pitcher and we know to play tight defense," Cid said. "Pitching is going to be good no matter what so even though we got three (runs) we knew it was going to be a lot."
UC Davis commit Alyse Rojas went 2-for-4 with a double and two runs scored while Oregon State commit Hope Brander chipped in with an RBI single.
AASA finished with nine hits. Their offense was able to chase Batbusters starting pitcher Natalie Lugo from the game early in the top of the third. Farrah Steffany came in relief of Lugo and gave up no runs on four hits while striking out two.
UCLA commit Bri Perez led the Batbusters, who defeated the SoCal Choppers Fausett team 1-0 to reach the championship, at the plate going 3-for-4 with double.
Jadelyn Allchin and Lauren Gutierrez each went 2-for-3 in the loss. AASA defeated SoCal A's Richardson 1-0 to reach the title game. Sunday afternoon was a display of some of the finest softball talent the West Coast had to offer.
"It's good, we went all the way the full seven innings," Cid said. "Played hard with a lot of focus so it's good."
The game was a preview of the future of the PAC 12 feel. 12 players either signed or have given verbal commitments to the conference.
The Explosion defeated Sorcerer 5-1 in the 16U PGF Ultimate Challenge.
The OC Batbusters Campbell team defeated the CA Breeze Warren team 9-1 in the 14U PGF Ultimate Challenge championship game.
