All year you work for one goal. 16 girls from 10 different states, coming together because we want to be the last one standing at the end of summer at PGF Nationals on Bill Barber field. We know that we are not the only team with this dream, teams across the country are saying the same thing. We turned our dream into reality, and never lost sight of our main goal. All year we referred to the things that took place, things that were good and improvements that needed to be made as a stepping stone to Nationals.
This is my third year at Nationals. Every night for the last three years going to bed I look up at my ceiling and see the quote, "one more," and to the side of it is a picture of the state of California. The last two years we haven't made it to the final game and both years I promised myself I was going to do whatever it took that next year so I wouldn't be left with the unsatisfied hunger. That reminder when I wake up reinforces what I needed to do to reach that goal.
Now, I'm here exactly nine hours until I take the field to compete for the National Championship.
This tournament everyone has taken responsibility for their role. Each role being an important piece to the puzzle. Whether it's being the dominating pitcher, big stick to get the key hit, or pinch runner coming in to get the game changing extra base.
At the end of the tournament the winning team all gets the same size ring, because everyone played an equal part. My role changed a little this year. I had the opportunity to stay down in 14s and make my run in the circle going for a Championship or I could move up to 16s as the only 2019 on Team Conroy working to earn my innings on the mound. When our two 2017 Veteran phenom pitchers Meghan Beaubien and Kenna Wilkey are on the mound, I earned my position at first base when I am not pitching, and hold a spot in our competitive line up.
I don't think I could've made a better decision in my life. Every single one of us push each other to get better all year long. Even more importantly this team shows the true meaning of team chemistry. We always pick each other up and that makes the game we love even more enjoyable. When bracket play started we thought one game down seven to go, then before I knew it we were saying four down three to go, now it's hitting me saying six down only one to go!
It's finally starting to sink in that the goal we've been working for all year, is within such close reach. Amazing to think that tonight we have the chance to earn Coach Bill Conroy, one of the most successful coaches in travel ball, his 1st PGF National Championship trophy as a coach. Tonight, I want to take in the moment because this is the moment I've lived for. 68 of the top teams in the country and there are two are left standing. Only one will be left, and I will do anything to be the one running into the middle of the dog pile that will happen when "We Are The Champions" start playing.
VLB 8 hours until we bring home the trophy back to Midwest where it belongs!
