If there is one thing you would say that separates you from other club programs, what would it be? So many great programs have the ability to develop talent and put girls in the right place. We work very hard to provide a positive place of learning and with that the girls can not only learn how to play they can truly enjoy the experience of playing softball.
Competition would also be what a big part of our environment. We preach that great players do not fear other great players they are motivated by them and we use that every time we take the field.
What other factors would you say add to the success of your Firecrackers team? I would have to go back to our culture. We talk about being great. Not just in softball. It is a day to day challenge to be great at all things we do in life and we make that matter for them. When they have that belief it is amazing to see how beautiful they develop on and off the field.
When did the team/program start and how and why did it come to be? Fall of 2007 was when I started coaching the Firecrackers. Having a daughter who was interested to playing definitely got me involved.
Where are you based and where do your athletes come from? Chino, California. We have players from all over southern California as well as players who have travelled from Ohio, Oregon, Nevada and Arizona to play for us.
What have been some of your successes in terms of winning or placing at events? We have been fortunate to have won a National Championship, have three top five finishes, and achieve five top 10 national finishes. We have won Colorado Fireworks tournament twice.
What makes the Firecrackers organization unique in your opinion? Tony Rico and his vision for not only the sport but the female athlete, truly an amazing experience to be part of the Firecracker Organization.
What’s your softball background and how did you get to the point of leading the team? My dad coached Leah O'brien way back and my sister played with her thru out all stars and high school ball, so the game was part of my growing up and once I had daughters very much wanted to coach them in the sport.
What is your primary focus or goal with this team? To continue to get them ready for College not only as an athlete but as strong confident young woman, so that they have the ability to handle life's adversities. And to continue to compete year in and year out against the best teams in the country.
What do you think are the strengths of the team? Culture. We have belief in how we prepare to play the game and with the trust that we have in each other we are able to compete with and against the best teams in the country.
