But one thing you can always count on in the loaded 32-team field is there's always an upset in the first round.
The Fighting Irish entered the game against Santiago (20-6) with a 13-13 record, but Kennedy has wins over Norco and Lakewood, who were both ranked in the state's top 20 at the time, on its resume.
"I'm really proud of how our ladies battle and battle throughout the game and never give up," Fighting Irish coach Don Harper said. "We are competing hard and now they are putting themselves in position to win."
The Sharks had a 2-0 lead heading into the top of the sixth when Kennedy struck for three runs to take the lead. Makenna Komoda's drove in two runs with a two-out single to put the Fighting Irish on top.
Erica Guerrero went the distance, working out of a bases-loaded jame in the bottom of the seventh to seal the win for Kennedy, which plays Murrieta Vista Murrieta on Tuesday, May 24, at a site to be determined.
Etiwanda 7, Riverside King 2: Grand Canyon-bound Megan Stevens and Oklahoma-bound Vanessa Taukeiaho hit back-to-back homers in the bottom of the fifth to lead the top-seeded Eagles (29-2), ranked No. 4 in the state. It was Stevens' 18th home run and Taukeiaho's 20th homer.

Temecula Great Oak 5, Valencia West Ranch 1: Dylinn Stancil and Serena Quinata hit solo homers and Mary Nejo added a three-run bomb to lift the Wolfpack (16-6) over the Wildcats (19-9), who reached the Division 1 finals last season.
Garden Grove Pacifica 8, Long Beach Poly 0: Arizona-commit Hannah "Peanut" Martinez and Cal State Fullerton-bound Irieanna Naea homered as the Mariners (20-5) rolled over the Jackrabbits (11-8).
Valencia/Valencia 3, Pomona Diamond Ranch 0: Texas-commit Shea O'Leary tossed a four-hit shutout with five strikeouts, Alexis Genovese went 2 for 3 with a run and an RBI and Erin Andris went 2 for 3 with a run for the Vikings (20-9).
Rancho Santa Margarita Santa Margarita 10, Glendora St. Lucy's 0: Paige Vargas allowed three hits and struck out seven to record the shutout, Wagner-bound Kat Holmes-Stall went 2 for 3 with four RBI, Wagner-bound Alyssa Tucker went 2 for 3 with three RBI, George Washington-bound Jenna Cone went 1 for 3 with two RBI and Miranda Johnson went 2 for 3 with an RBI to help the Eagles (17-10) advance to the second round.

Los Alamitos 7, Long Beach Wilson 3: Arizona-commit Jenna Kean had a two-run triple and Iowa State-commit Andrea Gonzalez drove her in with a sacrifice fly to give the third-seeded Griffins (24-2), ranked No. 2 in the state, a 4-3 lead and Oregon-commit Mary Iakopo homered as they pulled away for the win.
Chino 5, Fullerton Rosary Academy 1: Alyssa Gonzalez hit a three-run homer to help the Cowboys (15-10).

Saugus picked up a run in the bottom of the sixth, but Pancino shut the door on the Centurions in the seventh to get the complete game win, allowing one earned run on five hits with five strikeouts. Lopez finished with 15 strikeouts to take the loss.
"It was a great pitchers' duel between two great athletes," Edison coach Kim Ensey said. "We were able to make adjustments late in the game and put the ball in play when we needed to. Kiana Pancino and (Biola-bound catcher) Kayla Neff are working together well in managing the game, which is allowing our defense to do their jobs."

Cypress 8, Orange El Modena 7: Paige Hallam had a three-run double and Maddy Byrd added an RBI triple in the bottom of the sixth to give the Centurions (20-8) an 8-6 lead and they held on to beat the Vanguards (12-17).
Orange Lutheran 11, Hacienda Heights Los Altos 1: Alisen Edsley and Lauren Espalin both belted three-run homers to lead the second-seeded Lancers (27-3), ranked No. 1 in the state, in the opening round of the playoffs.
