Studs from Opening Weekend
All the drama from opening day came with some pretty epic performances from teams and individuals. Take a look at our STUDS from this past weekend!

1. Florida Gators

They’re one of only two top six teams that remain undefeated and they spanked Michigan 8-0 in 5 innings. Enough said.

2. Auburn

Auburn forgot that they were playing softball this weekend and thought they were playing football. They scored 87 runs in five games — Let that sit a while…. Their opponents scored a total of 10; Auburn scored no less than 9 runs in each of their games.

Granted, they faced no top 25 teams but come on, they scored 28 runs in ONE game, starting that game with 15 runs in the first inning. That set school records for runs in an inning.

If somehow their offense didn’t impress you this past weekend, how about Marcy Harper and Rachael Walters combining for a no-no in Auburn’s first game of the season.

People, please start paying attention to Auburn!

3. Lexie Elkins

She led the NCAA in home runs last season, and we predicted that she’ll break the single season home run record this year. By the looks of it, she’s well on her way.

Through five games, the Ragin Cajuns’ senior catcher is batting .667 with 10 hits, five home runs, 14 RBIs, and a 1.800 slugging percentage.  In the Ragin' Cajuns game against Louisiana Tech, she blasted three home runs, tying a school record.

4. MJ Knighten

Not to be outdone by Elkins, Nebraska’s junior infielder came out the gate with a bang. Through five games as well, Knighten is batting .632 with 12 hits, five home runs, 14 RBIs, and a 1.474 slugging percentage.

If she and teammate Kiki Stokes can keep up their offensive dominance, Nebraska will be a top contender in the Big Ten.

5. Kelly Barnhill and the Florida Pitching Staff

We weren’t sure who, if anyone, could replace last year’s Player of the Year Lauren Haeger. We knew Barnhill was good — we ranked her as the No. 2 recruit in the country — but we needed to see her in the blue and orange against top 25 college teams to really get a feel for what this kid could do.

The she threw a three-hit, five-inning complete game in Florida’s anticlimactic rematch against Michigan and we were sold.

If Barnhill’s rising talent isn’t enough, Delanie Gourley and Aleshia Ocasio have a combined 0.00 ERA with three wins and 19 strikeouts.

It may take the whole staff to replace Haeger, but we’re convinced it could be done.

6. Fresno State

Fresno State came to play in 2016! The Bulldogs left ASU’s Kajikawa Classic with a perfect 5-0 record. More impressive than their pristine record right now are their upsets over Flo’s No. 7 and No. 14 teams, Tennessee and Utah.

The Bulldogs easily took care of Tennessee 7-3 than blanked the Utes 2-0. Looking at their competition in the upcoming Fresno State Kick-Off next weekend, there’s a good chance they go into Mary Nutter 10-0.

7. Meehra Nelson

Of all the pitchers you would expect to come out of opening weekend undefeated with an ERA under 1.00, Oregon State’s freshman pitcher Meehra Nelson probably wasn’t at the top of the list.

She tossed a two-hit shutout against New Mexico to start her collegiate career, then gave up four hits and 2 runs in a win over CSUN. Most impressively, the right-handed hurler threw another two-hit shutout, but this time it was against Flo #22 Kentucky. We'll be keeping a close eye on this one as the season progresses.
