ICYMI: Day 2 Highlights at Scenic City
The Scenic City Fall Showcase in Chattanooga, Tennessee wrapped up Sunday with Georgia Impact teams looking very impressive.
Pictured: action Sunday between Georgia Impact-Stewart and Southern Force-Bloomer at the 14U age level.
The Scenic City Fall Showcase in Chattanooga, Tennessee saw Friday’s games and most of Saturday’s get cancelled due to heavy rainstorms, but Sunday weather cleared enough to allow many of the top teams in the South and East regions to take the field in dry, but somewhat cold conditions, for the final day of the event.
There were championship games set to be played Sunday, but the cancellation of games impacted the event format; according to Event Director Jeremy Higdon, “We cut the championship play in order to get as many pools games as possible.”
FloSoftball correspondent Matthew Crownover, a standout baseball player who was the ACC Pitcher of the Year for Clemson last year and is now in the Washington National’s chain, covered some of the marquee games for us this weekend… here is his report on some top match-ups from yesterday:

Atlanta Premier-Perkins 16U vs. Indy Dream-Bell 16U
The Atlanta Premier got off to a hot start at Warner Park scoring five runs before many fans could take their seats.
Kelsey Bennett, the 2018 infielder/catcher and Virginia Tech commit, led off the action in the bottom of the second with a line shot off the shortstop’s glove into left center field.
Katie Perkins, a 2019 2B/1B verbaled to North Carolina, had a tough at bat fouling off tough pitches and eventually waited back on a change-up, ripping the pitch into right field to tack on another run to the Premier lead.
After two innings, Premier looked comfortably in control and cruised the rest of the contest with a 6-0 lead.
Pitcher Laken Chambers looked very impressive in her time in the circle, showing the ability to move the ball around and keep the Dream from getting anything going at the plate.

Georgia Impact vs. Jersey Intensity
In a matchup of two of the best 18U teams in the country, the Georgia Impact took to the plate first in the top of the 1st and wasted no time with two quick singles started by leadoff batter Haven Sampson, a 2017 outfielder committed to Florida.
Three hole batter Karly Heath walked to set the stage for cleanup hitter Kylee Love, a 2016 first baseman headed to Georgia State.
Love hit into a fielder’s choice but Jana Johns, a 2017 infielder headed to South Carolina, picked her teammate up in a big way with a frozen rope into left field for a single to knock in Sampson for an early 1-0 lead.
A wild pitch moved all runners up a base and scored another run. Ashley Morgan showed a good very smooth left handed swing with a line drive down the left field line to knock in two more Impact runs to extend the lead to 4-0.
Gabby Teran kept the hitting party going with a triple to center field to score Morgan and scored on the next pitch on a wild pitch to make the score 6-0.
Sampson added another hit with two outs to give her two impressive looking swings in the inning before the bleeding finally stopped after a six spot was put on the Intensity in the top of the first.
Karley Heath took the circle in the bottom of the first where she walked the first two batters she faced, but eventually settled down but not before getting a two-out strikeout to end a bases loaded threat.
The Impact showed why, at least this day against a quality component, it is considered one of the top club teams at its age level.

Georgia Impact-Stewart 14U vs. Southern Force-Bloomer 14U
In a match-up featuring two of the top 14U teams in the South, the Georgia Impact jumped to an early 1-0 lead in the 1st inning.
Elisabeth Huckleberry, a 2020 infielder/pitcher for Southern Force, led off the bottom of the 2nd with a shot up the middle for single off Impact pitcher Kira Morgan.
Alyssa Brewer followed with a rope single for into right field and heads up base running allowed Huckleberry to advance to 3rd and Brewer to move into scoring position at 2nd with no outs in the inning.
Allie Skaggs’ single down the 3rd base line knocked in two runs to allow the Force to take over the lead at 2-1.
The Force kept the pressure on with a bunt for a hit and a steal of 2nd base, but Madison McCoy lined out to 3rd to end the threat.
In the top of the 4th, Walker Wicklund and Kira Morgan of the Impact dropped bloop singles over the shortstop’s outstretched hands setting the stage for freshman Florida commit Emma “EC” Taylor to knock in a run with a single right back up the middle to even up the score in a game that would end up tied.
