In my nearly three months with FloSoftball, the Texas Bombers Exposure Weekend has been the event I’ve most looked forward to covering. Why? Because this showcase is much different than many of the typical fall showcases due to the novel and varied layout of the event.
Where most fall showcases just play two days of pool or round robin play —sometimes not even keeping score — the Texas Bombers Exposure Weekend showcases its players and teams in unique and effective ways.

I kicked my weekend off down here in Houston attending a Packed Deal clinic that was in conjunction with the Texas Bombers Exposure event. If you don’t know about The Packaged Deal, you should. It is a group of four former Division 1 softball standouts, Jen Schroeder (UCLA), Katie Schroeder (UCLA), Amanda Scarborough (Texas A&M), and Morgan Stuart (University of Washington), who travel the country hosting clinics for young softball players.
They’re aptly named The Packaged Deal because they can coach with authority on every aspect of softball — Jen covers catching, Katie is the offensive specialist, Amanda instructs on pitching, and Morgan specializes in defense. This forward-thinking, social media saavvy group of coaches recently introduced their very own app called My Packaged Deal. The app offers tips and drills for hitting, fielding, pitching, and catching as well as life; and the day it hit the app store, it broke into the top 10 sports apps! These four really are the Packaged Deal and prove it with how much of themselves they pour into their athletes and the game itself.

After The Packaged Deal clinic I headed over to the Texas Bombers Exposure event at the Scrap Yard Softball Complex just outside of Houston. I was immediately struck by the quality facilities at the Scrap Yard. Tucked away in the back of an upscale housing neighborhood, the Scrap Yard is one of the most striking venues I’ve seen host a club tournament. Complete with stadium seating, an upper deck for viewing the games, and artificial turf covering the entirety of the fields, the Scrap Yard serves as the perfect venue for this event.

The Friday night games weren’t your typical showcase, pool-play type games. Instead, uncommitted players from every team participating in the event were combined into teams that were then coached by college coaches. In the truest sense of the word “exposure,” these uncommitted players were coached by coaches from some of the best programs in the country including the University of Oregon, the University of Texas, and Florida State University. There’s no better way to expose uncommitted players to top-level recruiting than to have them be coached by the top programs in the country. What an incredible opportunity for these players to showcase their skills to college coaches!

Tomorrow kicks off with position-specific combines, affording college coaches another unique way of scouting players outside of typical pool play games. Teams do compete against one another for much of the day after the combines until the coaches social later Saturday evening. Competition picks up again Sunday afternoon, with the last games of the event starting at 5:00 PM Sunday evening.
Be sure to check back tomorrow for my recap of the combines, games, and coaches social!
