High School: Jonesboro (Ark.)

StudentSportsSoftball.com: So how does an Arkansas girl get seen and offered by Oregon?
Madi Bishop: I joined with one of the right organizations that put me on the biggest stages in softball to be seen.

SSS.com: When did you decide to commit and what led into the decision?
MB: I committed on January 28, which was the day I got back home from their elite camp. The opportunity to play for a dream school, the chance to play for a school in the Pac-12, the program itself in Oregon, the facilities, and the coaches all tipped the scale for me. There was just nothing comparable.

SSS.com: How did you tell the coaches, in person, on the phone, on an unofficial visit?
MB: On the phone.

SSS.com: Have you been to the campus a few times?  What was your reaction in seeing their facilities?
MB: I have been twice now. It’s so hard to describe how amazing it is, so my mom and I just call it the emerald city.

SSS.com: Any concerns about being so far from home for you or your family?
MB: Obviously it is far and I have a very close relationship with my family, but they all know that it’s an opportunity of a lifetime. I will get a top notch education, and get to do what I love in the process.

SSS.com:  What did Oregon and other schools who offered say they liked about you?
MB: Definitely my stick, but also that I have a presence and that I play with a lot of confidence.

SSS.com: What’s been the highlight so far in your softball career?
MB: The highlight of my career was hitting a home run in Colorado against the OC Batbusters to give us a lead late in the game.

SSS.com: How did you get connected with the Texas Glory organization?
MB: The Glory organization and Coach Ed Naudin are very reputable around the country so my mom just picked up the phone and asked him to take a look at me in the spring of my freshman year.

SSS.com: Which position do you like playing more, third or first, and why?
MB: I prefer playing third, but I will play wherever my team needs me the most.

Quick Hitters

What do you want to major in at Oregon?
I’m still not 100% sure yet.

Fill in the blank… When I’m on the field the opposition better:_________________
…be prepared for a constant, relentless mental and physical war.

If you could have dinner with anyone in the world, who would you choose and why?
I would love to have dinner with Evan Longoria. He is my favorite baseball player because of how he plays the game and how he carries himself.

What’s something unusual or different about you that few know?
I am a very talented archer. I competed in the state tournament last year and finished in the top eight.

What do you like to do in your alone time?
When I get a little down time I love to listen to Pandora or watch movies on Netflix.

What’s your favorite social media platform and why?
Instagram is my favorite without a doubt. I like it the best because I can keep up with my friends without having to read, like on twitter.

If you were stranded on a desert island and could only take one thing with you, what would it be?
I would take my bible. It’s like my instruction manual for everything. Without it, I’d be lost.

The Holidays are fast approaching, what’s the No. 1 gift request you have in for Santa?
A new iPhone is at the top of my list. My current one has been through a few years of torture.

What’s been the most rewarding gift or service you’ve ever done or given someone?

My freshman year, a classmate and I organized a big supply drive for soldiers in Afghanistan at a base. We collected supplies for 500 soldiers. Each individual box had toiletry items, snacks, and games or some form of entertainment.

In one sentence, state your philosophy of life:
Never put things that matter the most at the mercy of things that matter the least.

TOP 2015 HOT 100 CANDIDATE:

*** P Sydney Smith (Wichita Mustangs)… committed to LSU

Sydney Smith was one of three pitchers on the Beverly Bandits that won the Boulder tournament as well as the 16U PGF Nationals (the other pitchers were Miranda Elish, who’s committed to Oregon, and Brooke Wyman).

Sydney runs the bases.

Sydney now plays for the Wichita Mustangs (as we reported in an earlier Daily Update) and did well for them in her time pitching at Big League Dreams (Calif.) when she tied the So Cal A’s 3-3 and beat the Corona Angels 3-2.

She’s currently a junior at Maple Grove, Minn., a 3A school in the largest high school class.  Last season as a sophomore she went 19-0 heading into the state tournament and finished 20-2, leading the state in wins, ERA (0.39) and strikeouts (178).

Sydney is also a good hitter and was third in the state with 33 RBI while hitting .545.

She finished second in the Minnesota Gatorade Player of the Year voting and also runner-up to a senior for the Minnesota Player of the Year.  She earned 1st team All-State honors too.

Prior to joining the Bandits she played for the Minnesota Renegades and splitting the pitching with Emma Hylen (Iowa State commit) helped her team to a 4th place 16U ASA national title and pitched a no-hitter and a shutout in the tournament as well as hitting .700.

Sydney was also selected to the DeMarini Top 100 national event in 2012 that was held in Chicago.
