Michelle Carew Classic – Day 1 (4/3)

The opening day of the Michelle Carew Classic in Anaheim Hills, Calif. saw a minor upset as Chino Hills, ranked No. 30 in the latest FAB 50, fell to Vista Murrieta 4-3.

That Vista Murrieta won isn’t too big of a shock, however, as UCLA-bound pitcher Selina Ta’amilo was dominant, allowing only two hits while striking out 11. Murrieta then went on to beat Norco, a CIF-Southern Section Div. 1 Finalist last year, 4-1.

Many eyes will be on Amador Valley from Pleasanton, Calif. who will take the field Thursday for its opening game, a 11 am matchup against Piedra Vista from Farmington, N.M. Led by UCLA signee Johanna Grauer, the NorCal team is ranked No. 3 in the country.

The other big news on Wednesday was the dominance of Pacifica which run-ruled both of its games.  The Mariners may have lost twice to the top team in the nation, Mission Viejo, but they’re smashing most other opponents.

In its opening game, a 8-0 five inning win over Trabuco Hills, Stanford commit Kaley Winegarner pitched a no-hitter with two walks and five strikeouts to run her record to 3-1 on the year.

Sophomore Irieanna Naea, who has committed to Cal State Fullerton, hit a two-run homer, her fifth in the last five games she’s played.

In the second game, Pacifica knocked off Orange Lutheran 9-0 in a six inning game as senior pitcher Kaylee Carlson scattered three hits while striking out eight to run her record to 10-1 on the season.  Michigan commit Faith Canfield hit a game-ending three run home run, her third of the season.

Another team that looks strong is No. 32 nationally ranked Yorba Linda, which was led by pitcher Paige von Sprecken’s 13 strikeouts in a 4-2 win over El Toro and her 14 K’s in a one-hitter 5-0 win over Santa Monica.
