Recruiting News & Notes (4/11)
We finish the work and school week looking at some top recruits who are lighting it up on the softball field and also update some team changes and the latest commits…
*** Megan Harris, the 2015 outfielder from Whitehouse High (Texas) who plays for the Firecrackers –RWB Poole team and is committed to Ole Miss, is tearing it up in high school ball.
One of the top prospects out of East Texas, Megan has played 27 games and is hitting .678 with 45 RBI, 11 doubles and, impressively, nine triples and 30 steals.
In addition, she is carrying an on-base percentage of .714 and a 1.080 slugging percentage.
Looks like the Rebels will get a very dangerous lefty slapper with legit speed and the ability to disrupt on the base paths.
*** Junior infielder Vada Sherrill, who is a driving force behind the Alexander Central High (Taylorsville, N.C.) team that’s ranked in the top three of all the major h.s. softball polls—No. 1 in NFCA, No. 2 in MaxPreps and No. 3 in StudentSportsSoftball.com’s FAB 50—is having a monster year as well and is a leading candidate for North Carolina Player of the Year.
Playing one of the toughest schedules in Class 4A, she’s hitting .525 (31-for-59) with nine doubles, three home runs, 23 RBI and 25-for-26 on steals.
Vada had originally committed to Virginia Tech but is now back on the market and, after blowing up this spring and set to have a huge summer, she won’t be uncommitted for long.
*** UCLA commit Paige Halstead, who we ranked as the No. 21 best player in the 2015 class, is showing why she’s so highly touted.
Playing for Los Osos High in Rancho Cucamonga, the tall athlete who can play catcher as well as shortstop, is hitting .583 in league and .511 through 15 games with four home runs.
Her team is 13-2 and beat a very good Corona Santiago squad 5-2 to win the championship of the Jurupa Tournament where she hit a three-run home run.
Paige was the first in the 2015 class to commit to the Bruins and plays now for the Explosion club team out of SoCal.
*** A couple weeks ago we profiled Florida commit Natalie Lugo, a freshman pitcher for South Hills High in West Covina, Calif. who plays club for the OC Batbusters-Stith team.
Natalie has had no problem adjusting to high school ball as she’s lead the Huskies to to a 13-3 mark while compiling a 7-1 record and 0.25 ERA so far this year.
Earlier this week she pitched a no-hitter in a 5-0 win over crosstown rival West Covinga High as she struck out 15 and allowed only three baserunners.
“So far, that’s my best game,” Lugo told the San Gabriel Valley Tribune. “I was just focusing on my spins and getting the ball to move more than throw hard. My best pitch was a rise ball, but I was also throwing screwballs and curves.”
*** Two team updates we made on the Master Verbal List this week regarding changing teams:
— P Annelise Oswalt (2015, Texas Tech) is now on the Texas Glory-Shelton team. She had previously been on the younger Glory team coached by Ed Naudin.
— C/3B/OF Dana Dela Torre (2014, Utah Valley) is on OC Batbusters-Gonzales… we had her on the Explosion team which she played for two years ago.
