The ASA 16U action started yesterday and continues pool play today.  The 18U level kicked off bracket play Wednesday morning.

The ASA 18U GOLD Nationals finished pool play Tuesday in Oklahoma City and Wednesday sees the start of double elimination bracket play with teams all squaring off in the morning and needing seven games to win it all one the winner’s side (eight from the loser’s bracket).

Nine teams won all three of their pool games and look strong heading into Wednesday morning play (see the list below)

Player-wise, here were some of the highlights from Tuesdays games:

  • In a battle of unbeaten, the Wichita Mustangs defeated American Pastime 5-2 as All-American outfielder Emily Griggs (2014, LSU) went 2-for-4 with a triple and single.
  • Kesley Huff is on fire for the Gators Gold-Flannery team. She added another pair of doubles in the 6-4 win over Atlanta Vipers-Loveless and in the three pool games hit .600 (6-for-10) with six RBI.
  • Pitcher Jacquelyn Sertic (2014, North Dakota State) of the Lil Rebels 96 squad allowed only one hit in a five-inning shortened win 8-0 over Oklahoma Diamond Girls. She also gave up only one walk while striking out six.
  • Another All-American, catcher Bailey Hemphill (2016, Alabama), had a big game as she went 2-for-2 with a home run, a walk and two RBI to lead Louisiana Voodoo-Brignac to a 5-1 win over St. Louis Academy Gold.

On the ASA Nationals 16U side, the 48 teams are still in pool play which continues through Wednesday.

Highlights on Tuesday included the following:

  • The Texas Aces topped San Diego Elite 8-0 in five innings and were led by Shelby Achille who scattered four hits with 6 K’s in the win.
  • Maddie Blair went 2-for-4 with three RBI to pace Jacksonville Storm to a 7-4 win over Team Power 97.
  • You hate to see such an ugly blowout as the TN Fury 97’s 23-1 win over Delaware Cobras which included nine runs in the first and 11 in the third, but you have to give credit to Kelsey McGuffin (2015, Western Kentucky), who went 3-for-3 with a home run and five RBI and Jordan Fortel (2015, Tennesee-Chattanooga) who went 2-for-4 with a home run and also plated five runs.
