Recruiting News & Notes (8/15)

A lot of ground to cover including a follow-up on the players who were dropped by an SEC school, a Cali. girl who’s going to the Midwest where she has family and another player on the talented Tulsa Elite 98 team who has pulled the trigger…

*** Here’s a brief update on the three players that had their scholarship offers withdrawn by Georgia as we detailed earlier this week.

I spoke to one of the club coaches of the players and he said that after the article went up Tuesday night around 9 pm PST (midnight EST), he was contacted Wednesday morning at 6 am PST by the first of many club coaches reaching out about his player.

One of the three—will keep anonymous for now—received interest from colleges in the ACC, Big Ten, Pac-12 and SEC. The interest is high, but the challenge will be finding scholarship dollars as the 2015 and ’16 money is all but allocated.

The good news is it looks like all three have multiple options…

*** Got a nice e-mail from Eric Andris, the father of recent DePaul commit Erin Andris, who gave some background on the 2016 shortstop with the So Cal Choppers-Andris team:

Erin is headed to Chicago where she has extended family.
Erin is headed to Chicago where she has extended family.

“Erin began her travel softball career later than most as she starting at 13 years old with the 14U Choppers.  Erin was introduced to Gary Fausett who admired her power and began giving her batting lessons.”

“Prior to softball, Erin primarily played basketball and soccer.  She is very athletic with amazing speed and power including towering home runs.  You commented on her in an article written about the D9 So Cal National Skills Camp Day 1 where Erin was listed as a player to watch.”

“She is also a gifted musician and excellent student.  She plays the tenor sax and piano and was a state champion piano player at 10.  Erin has always been an honor student with a GPA consistently above 3.8 with honor courses.”

“After attending the D9 and other camps, colleges began to follow her.  While in Colorado, she had a very impressive all star game and made the All American team.  This led to several colleges following our games with DePaul being one of them. In order to give coaches another look, Erin was given an opportunity by Pam Newton’s Cal Lite team to play in the PGF 16U Nationals Premier division.”

“So why DePaul?”

“Because of her extended family residing in Chicago, she began to look closer at the school.  Her desired major is digital cinema and DePaul ranks as one of the best in the country.”

“After narrowing it down to DePaul and Cal State Northridge, Erin decided to make the campus visit in early August and fell in love with the campus and the big city atmosphere.”

“The final selling point was Coach Eugene Lenti and staff. She felt very comfortable with the group and Coach Lenti’s incredible accomplishments in the 30-plus years at DePaul spoke for itself.”

“When asked about her timing by the coaching staff, she said, ‘Can I do it now?’”

*** Jeff Filali who runs the Tulsa Elite program informs me that another player from the ’98 team has pulled the trigger: Hayleigh Galvan, a 2016 catcher/utility player, has committed to Oklahoma State.

Hayleigh plays at Sequoyah Tahlequah High (Okla.) and according to her coach was also recruited by Arkansas, Kansas and Louisville among other programs.

*** Another player to add to the verbal list is Caitlin “CT” Terrazas, a 2016 third baseman with the Texas Bombers Gold team who committed to Lamar University last September 15, but we missed her somehow.

CT played had a great week at the ASA 16U Gold tourney where she had no errors in the field and at the plate batted .432 with four homeruns—including a grand slam—and had 15 RBI.

Definitely worthy of being on the All-Summer Team list!

Sydney committed last September.
Sydney was a 1st Team All-District pick at catcher.

*** Sydney McKay, a 2015 outfielder/catcher with the Aces Express, has committed to Louisiana-Monroe.

Sydney was a 22-5A 1st Team All-District catcher for Pearland (Texas) where she helped the team finish as district runners-up. In 2013, she an All-State pick and NFCA South Central Regional 1st Team honoree after hitting .425 with 26 RBI and six doubles.

She has the speed at 2.65 home-to-first to bat leadoff and has a 3.38 GPA.
