Sunday was the second of the two day tryouts as 37 players from across the country competed to make one of the 17 spots on the Jr. National Team.

The official roster is expected to be announced Monday by 11 PST.

As mentioned yesterday, I’m in Texas and couldn’t be at the tryouts taking place in Irvine, Calif., but I did get info from several connected people and here are some notes from Sunday’s action:

*** Good news involving junior Alissa Dalton, the infielder with the Diamond Sports Hotshots in Texas, who was hurt Saturday early in the workouts with a shoulder injury.

Alissa Dalton's x-rays were positive meaning she'll not need surgery.
Alissa Dalton’s x-rays were positive meaning she’ll not need surgery.

Alissa separated her should but no surgery is needed, although she will be out several weeks. Doctors reportedly got it back in place and she’ll be sore for a while, but thankfully there will not be any long-lasting effects from the injury.

*** There were games played all weekend and after four games or so, several players have looked impressive, enough that we’re making predictions on who will make it:

— it will be shocking if Johanna Grauer, the UCLA freshman pitcher doesn’t make it. She has been practically untouchable as faced 22 batters and struck out 19!

— speaking of UCLA, catcher Paige Halstead, the 2015 player for Explosion, is looking very good after getting hits today off pitchers Tera Blanco (Michigan freshman) and Kelly Barnhill (2015 Florida commit, plays for East Cobb Bullets-Schnute).

— I would be surprised if Barnhill doesn’t make it. The Nationals teams often go with flame-throwers and the Georgia standout, who regularly hits 70 mph or higher, fits that bill.

Syd Romero (left) and Taran Alvelo have great chances to make the team.

— It’s good news/bad news for Mike Stith of the OC Batbusters – Haning/Stith juggernaut team. The players who make this team won’t be available for PGF Nationals next year and the defending champions could have several players taken.

  • Infielder Sydney Romero, the 2015 Oklahoma signee and younger sister of Michigan All-American Sierra Romero, was one of 10 players who tested in the open tryouts on Friday and make it to the main tryout. She’s looking too good to pass up .
  • Amanda Lorenz, the Full Count Softball top player in the 2015 Hot 100 and Florida signee, is looking good to make the team as an outfielder.
  • Alyssa Palomino, the power-hitting senior outfielder headed to Arizona, is having a strong camp and her big bat would add pop to the Jr. Team.
  • Pitcher Taylor McQuillin is a fourth who could make it, but there are a lot of great pitchers and she definitely has the talent to represent the U.S., but it’ll be interesting to see if there’s enough space at the position with Grauer, Barnhill and also Taran Alvelo, the Washington-bound 2015 pitcher looking outstanding with her power pitches working.

— Speaking of the Hot 100, the No. 1 player in the 2014 class per the Full Count Softball ratings was Jenna Lilley, the freshman infielder at Oregon. She’s looking very strong and her high-average bat will likely help her make the team.

Her Duck teammate Gwen Svekis has an excellent chance to be one of the backstops on the team.

— You always need a table-setter/speedster/five-tool player and perhaps the best candidate for that role is outfielder Jazymn Jackson, the Cal freshman who is looking very good.

— Others who have excellent chances to make the team, pending positional needs and space availability:

Emily Griggs continues to impress.
Emily Griggs continues to impress.

*** Outfielder Emily Griggs, the LSU freshman who came from the open tryout Friday, continues to impress with a strong arm and solid all-around game.

*** Megan Gregg, the freshman infielder at Tennessee, continues to shine and has a good bat with power and solid defense to make her a versatile option who can play several positions.

*** DJ Sanders, the freshman infielder at Louisiana-Lafayette, isn’t as well known as some, but her skills are making her hard to ignore and she has a great shot to make the 17-member team.
