When we released the FAB 50 16U Club rankings on Jan. 29, we had heard rumblings that one of the teams in the Top 10, the So Cal A’s-Quarles team, was in the midst of making a big transition.

Sure enough, on Monday at Los Alamitos High (Calif.), I had the chance to confirm the facts: Head Coach Shawn Quarles had changed his Cerritos, Calif.-based club team to the Ohana Tigers (you can find more about the team on its website here).

Coach Quarles is wearing dual hats: not only is he the Manager of the Tigers, which includes players committed to major programs like Arizona, Arizona State, Cal State Fullerton, Florida, Ohio State, Oklahoma and UCLA (his daughter, Malia Quarles), he’s also the head coach at Gahr High out of Cerritos.

I caught up with Coach Quarles on President’s Day as his team played a pair of practice games against Los Al and Saugus High (led by pitcher Mariah Lopez, the No. 1 player in the 2016 Hot 100 and also an Oklahoma commit).

Here’s what he had to say about both teams including where the name “Ohana Tigers” comes from and a major reason the team was created!
