We have a mix of everything today: club news, great high school starts to the season and 18 more verbals to report!

Club News:

*** Yesterday when we profiled the 2018 standouts from the Texas Bombers organization led by Scott Smith, it was noted that the program would be adding a third state having a team following Texas and Louisiana.

That state is Arizona.

The Texas Bombers organization has added a third state, Arizona, to its program.
The Texas Bombers organization has added a third state, Arizona, to its program.

“Sometimes the right coach and the right players come along and it’s very clear they would make a great addition to any organization,” said Smith this week.  “To that end, it’s my honor to introduce the first Bomber team in the state of Arizona, the Arizona Bombers 18U Gold!  We are excited to announce that effective April 1st, we will proudly welcome the newest Bomber team into our program!”

Smith continued, “There is a huge amount of talented players in Arizona and we’ve always had interest in our program from players and parents in the past.  We’re always looking to add talent to our organization, but finding a coaching staff and team that mirrors our goals, work ethic, and overall commitment to growing better players is hard to find.”

“We are happy to announce Mike Velasco will be the head coach for our new Arizona Bombers team. There are already several talented players in place but he will be adding a few more to fill out the roster in the coming weeks.”

*** Freshman Elizabeth Lindsey, a catcher/third baseman, has made two switches recently:

She has joined the Mizuno Hawks – Judge team after being with the Birmingham Thunderbolts 99 squad last year. She has also committed to Central Florida after having originally verballed to Kentucky.

Madison Lindsey has already won a National Championship.

*** A player whose stock is rising is Madison Lindsey, a 2018 lefty pitcher who has pulled in some pretty good stats and accomplishments in Texas over the last five years.

She was on the 10U team that finished 2nd at USFA and won a 12U ASA National Championship with Texas Kaos.

Madison is currently playing for Impact Gold and is a freshman at Kingwood High (Texas) and is being recruited by Stanford, Washington, Arizona State and Baylor among others according to her coaches (she’s visited all but Washington unofficially).

She has a 60-plus fastball and a “devasting” riseball.   Over the past four years she’s gone 257-45 including a 40-0 mark during the 12U national championship year and at PGF Nationals last summer she went 3-1 with a 1.23 ERA.

Madison also has a 4.4 GPA which doesn’t hurt!

Standout High School Performances

Shelby Wickersham had a great week in Louisiana high school play.
Shelby Wickersham had a great start in Louisiana high school play.

*** Shelby Wickersham, a 2018 pitcher for the Louisiana Patriots Gold team when playing club ball, kicked off her high school career in style recently.

The freshman at Mount Carmel Academy in New Orleans threw a no hitter, though it was a three inning shortened run-rule game.

Shelby struck out eight of the nine batters she faced—the other batter bunted out to third base.

*** Interesting story out of Nevada: at Rancho High in Las Vegas, Sam Pochop (2017, Tulsa) is the No. 1 pitcher but promising freshman Gianna Carosone, who we did a Rising Star profile in February, was asked to help support Sam by pitching some to lighten the load.

Yesterday, Gianna had an unbelievable game: she threw a five-inning perfect game with seven K’s and also went 3-for-3, all triples, with one RBI.

That was her first varsity game… not a bad way to start your high school career!

*** Rylee Rodriguez of Dawson, Texas was already well-known going into this year. She was in the Full Count 2016 Hot 100 rankings and, as a sophomore, the infielder hit 17 home runs and 67 RBI to earn Class 4A 1st team All-State honors as a utility player.

Rylee Rodriguez is being intentionally walked with the bases loaded!

Her high school coach, David McCorkle (who also coaches the Texas Aces), wrote to say: “Rylee is absolutely tearing it up! She has been walked intentionally twice with the bases loaded to walk in runs and several times to load the bases.Twice the hitter behind her, Amber Langston (2017, Idaho State) has hit a grand slam… walk her again!”

Rylee is hitting .621 going 18-for-29 with seven home runs or an average of one every four at-bats. She’s also getting intentionally walked every 2.8 plate appearances and has a .761 on-base percentage and a 1.414 slugging percentage.

In her 2 ½ year high school career, Rylee has a .519 batting average and 39 home runs.
