I did a live blog from the Boulder Independence Tournament at Stazio Fields in Boulder, Colo., where many of the top club teams in the nation were competing in the 18U Boulder Division on Thursday, July 2. Here’s how it all went down.

WEATHER HITS BOULDER IDT

Lightning storms caused a 40-minute delay to the evening games at Stazio Fields, but play has picked up again. They will try get as many pool play games in as they can tonight.

DYKES PUTS HERSELF ON LOUISVILLE SLUGGER HIT CLUB WATCHLIST

FloSoftball general manager Brentt Eads has been scouring the Boulder IDT for Louisville Slugger Hit Club candidates and Alabama-bound Reagan Dykes of the Thunderbolts has put herself on the watchlist with authority with three home runs in the past two days.

“They were no doubters,” said Eads, who witnessed all three of Dykes’ bombs. “She is connecting. It was on three different fields, so it wasn’t a cheap field.

WORD ON THE STREET

There ae a ton of college coaches roaming around and assessing talent at the Boulder IDT. It was just announced that Maryland coach Courtney Scott-Deifel was leaving Maryland to take the head coaching job at Arkansas.

Maryland-commit Caroline Hedgecock is in Boulder playing for Chill Gold (Ill.), aka IL Chill. With no coaching staff left at Maryland, we hear SEC, Big 12 and Big 10 schools are interested if she waifers on her commitment.

BTW, FloSoftball contributor T Statman of the T-Bolts did a video interview with Hedgecock and that will be up on flosoftball.com in the next couple of days.

PLAY OF THE TOURNAMENT … SO FAR

Cue the ESPN Sportscenter music because we have a candidate for Plays of the Week. Birmingham Thunderbolts (Ala.) outfielder Elissa Brown went fully outstretched and crashed through the fence in left-center field to rob Corona Angels-Tyson’s Tristen Edwards of a home run.

Corona Angels coach Marty Tyson took a few steps toward the outfield to tip his hat to Brown, then clapped toward Edwards and told her “great hit.”

Corona Angels ended up beating the T-Bolts, 7-5, in a pool play game.

BELLA NORTON ROCKS

Bella Norton is a self-proclaimed Classic Rock nerd who loves Van Halen and Aerosmith and plays bass guitar. She also happens to be one of the hottest hitters on the club scene and she plays for the … wait for it … Newtown Rock (Pa.). I’ll have a more in depth story on her on flosoftball.com in the next couple of days.

SURPRISE!!!

So former Missouri first baseman Kelsea Roth decided to do something sneaky and surprise her family, which was in Boulder to support little sister Maddie Roth, a Utah-bound catcher who plays for the Cal Cruisers.

Roth made it to town this morning and arrived at the hotel where her family was staying. They had no idea she would be making the trip from Mizzou.

“Maddie and I had just got back from breakfast,” said Aimee Roth, the mother of the two standout players. “I get a call from the front desk and they say, ‘We have something for you down at the front desk.’ I’m thinking what could this be?’ Maddie and I get down to the lobby and see Kelsea and I start laughing and crying. Maddie was like, ‘WHAAAT!?!'”

There was one hitch in the plan.

“I didn’t even think to bring a camera,” Kelsea said.

Papa Joe Roth had know idea what was going on when they all got back to the room.

“I thought somebody brought a dog into the room because all my girls went crazy,” Joe said.

The Roths were all together to support Maddie for the Cruisers game against Southern Force (Ga.) at Stazio Fields in Boulder.
