Sudden Impact Gold (Tex.) has made some noise on the club scene in recent years, but the Texans made a big impact on the national scene with a commanding 11-2 victory over Tony Rico’s Firecrackers (Calif.) in the 18U Super 64 championship game at the Triple Crown Colorado Fireworks Tournament this past weekend in Aurora, Colo.
“This win was a great accomplishment on a goal set,” Tennessee-bound second baseman/outfielder Aubrey Leach said. “But it also put a national target on our back for nationals.”
Sudden Impact is certainly going to garner some national attention heading into the inaugural USA Softball Junior Olympic Cup July 26-Aug. 1 in Chino Hills, Calif., after beating the Firecrackers in five innings via the mercy rule.

Leach, who went 20 for 30 with three doubles, a triple, 13 runs and five stolen bases in 11 games at the Fireworks Tournament, went 2 for 3 with a walk, three runs and an RBI and Purdue-bound Lexi Huffman belted two home runs in the fourth inning against the Firecrackers. Baylor-commit Shelby McGlaun pitched a solid game in the championship game to get the win, giving up four hits, one earned run and two walks, while striking out two.
“The win was an entire team effort,” Leach said. “Pitching was outstanding and everyone pulled their weight. We work well as a team from every aspect of the game. We knew the Firecrackers would bring a good game, and we were determined to never give up.”
Uncommitted 2018 infielder/outfielder Kyndall Murray went 15-for-29 for the tournament for Sudden Impact and LSU-bound middle infielder Amber Serrett hit a walk-off grand slam in a 10-6 win over Gametime Stars Gold (Okla.) to get Sudden Impact into the semifinals on Sunday morning.
Sudden Impact’s 16U team reached the Fireworks 16U championship game before losing to the Ohio Lasers, 11-10. Sudden Impact’s 16U team will be competing in the DeMarini Invitational Showcase this week in Chicago, Ill.
