Pac-12 bound Alynah Torres wins with power
Alynah Torres has seen her share of winning over the last year.
Earlier this month she helped the AZ Suncats 14U team win the Colorado Sparkler/Fireworks Power Pool Futures Championship in Aurora, Col. with a 2-1 win over the So Cal A’s.
In that game Alynah scored the run that led to the win.
Last summer, the 2019 shortstop helped the Suncats finish tied for 3rd at the PGF 14U Premier Nationals as a first-year 14U team as she hit .318 for the team, which finished 6-2.
And in 2013, Alynah, who has been the starting shortstop for the Cats 2000 team for 2 ½ years, helped the team to a second-place finish.
Next week, the Arizona incoming freshman will try to help the Suncats overcome three Southern California powers—Corona Angels, So Cal A’s and OC Batbusters—who finished ahead or tied with Alynah’s team last summer at Nationals.
“She will now put her focus on PGF and trying to win a 14U National Championship,” the infielder’s father, Amador, told FloSoftball.
An outstanding middle infielder who hits in the 4 hole, Alynah has been hitting with power since her first day on the softball fields.
“She played club soccer when she was about seven or eight years old and then we put her in rec (softball) and she was hitting home runs about every at-bat. Her mom and I started thinking, ‘She’s pretty good at this!’”
This summer Alynah has been batting in the low .400 range and leads the team with over 20 home runs.
A five-tool player, coaches love her defense and an arm strong enough to make throws deep in the hole along with her offensive strengths of power and speed.
She shined at showcases where college coaches were impressed with her all-around game and schools like UCLA, Oregon, Oklahoma and Arizona pursued her, but one unofficial visit made the difference.
“On July 20,” Amador Torres recalls, “Alynah took an unofficial visit to Arizona State and after that visit a verbal was made. She accepted and committed to be a Sun Devil.”
So why ASU?
“Me and her mom had no say in the matter,” her father laughs. “It was a tough decision, but she loved the facilities at ASU and said it just felt comfortable and right. Plus, she really likes the coach (Craig Nicholson).”
She has a long way to go to play for the Pac-12 school and in the next few weeks she’ll have nothing but winning a PGF championship on her mind and after that working hard on her game.
“Alynah loves to work out and get better,” Amador says. “And what drives her is to be the best. She thinks she should get a base hit or get on base every time, that no one should get her out. That’s her mentality.”
