Event Primer: 2015 PGF 14U & 16U Premier Nationals

PGF_logoWeek 2 of the Premier Girls Fastpitch National Championships features 209 teams competing for national titles in the 14U and 16U Premier Divisions and the 14U and 16U Platinum Divisions all week at Huntington Beach Sports Complex, Fountain Valley Sports Park and Harvard Park in Southern California.

The Opening Ceremonies, which feature US Olympic gold medalist Jessica Mendoza, Hall of Famer Sue Enquist, Anita Wayne-Swift, he granddaughter of John Wayne, and IM5 performing on stage, will be held this evening at 5 p.m. at Central Park in Huntington Beach, Calif.

Bracket play in the double-elimination championships begins on Tuesday and concludes on Saturday with championship games at Deanna Manning Stadium at Bill Barber Park in Irvine, Calif. All of the finals will be streamed live on PGF’s YouTube channel. The 14U and 16U Premier title games will be shown tape delayed on Fox Sports West’s Prime Ticket and Comcast.

Here is Saturday’s PGF National Championship schedule at Bill Barber Park in Irvine:

  • 14U Premier championship game at 11 a.m.
  • 16U Premier championship game at 2 p.m.
  • 14U Platinum championship game at 5 p.m.
  • 16U Platinum championship game at 8 p.m.

FIVE TEAMS TO WATCH

Beverly Bandits Premier (Ill.): The Beverly Bandits organziation has the teams to watch in the 16U Premier Division with Cray Allen’s Beverly Bandits Premier (Ill.), which won the 16U title at the Boulder IDT, Jen Tyrell’s Beverly Bandits (Ill.), Beverly Bandits-Team DeMarini (Ill.) and Beverly Bandits So Cal-Lastrapes/McGowan (Calif.).

Ohana Tigers (Calif.): Shawn Quarles’ Ohana Tigers have a deep pitching staff with uncommitted Hannah Boos, Ohio State-commit Madison James, Cal State Fullerton-commit Janelle Rodriguez and uncommitted Heather Turner to go along with a loaded lineup that features Florida-committed SS/3B Brittany Allen, Arizona State-committed Danielle Gibson, Arizona-committed OF Jenna Kean, Florida-committed OF Jordan Matthews, UCLA-committed 3B/1B Malia Quarles and Oklahoma-committed OF Alexa Schultz. Ohana Tigers should be a force in the 16U Premier Division.

OC Batbusters-Briggs (Calif.): The Batbusters have Stanford-committed Maddy Dwyer as their ace in the circle and a lineup that features Arizona-committed 3B Hannah Martinez, Fresno State-committed OF McKenna Gray and Utah-committed SS/2B Abby Robertson, which should give them a chance at making a run in the 16U Premier Division.

So Cal Choppers-Fausett (Calif.): Gary Fausett’s Choppers beat Marty Tyson’s Corona Angels (Calif.), 7-2, in the Boulder IDT championship game and they beat Sorcerer (Calif.), 4-1, in the 14U Platinum national title at the Triple Crown/USA Nationals, so the Choppers look like the team to beat in the 14U Premier Division at the PGF Nationals. The Choppers are led by Makenna Harper, a 2018 P/OF who has verballed to Arizona State, and Shealyn O’Leary, an uncommitted 2018 pitcher.

Corona Angels-Tyson (Calif.): Marty Tyson’s Angels are the reigning and defending PGF 14U Premier national champions and they have the talent to make another run in the 14U Premier Division this time around too. The Angels team features Madison Huskey, a 2018 C/OF who has committed to Washington, and Chloe Nightingale, a 2018 right-hander who has committed to Utah State.

FIVE PLAYERS TO WATCH

Brooke Vestal, Texas Bombers Gold (Tex.): The Bombers are in the hunt for the 16U Premier national title with Vestal, a 6-foot-1 flamethrower who has committed to Oklahoma, in the circle. Vestal, ranked No. 1 in FloSoftball’s 2018 Hot 100, went 24-5 with 348 strikeouts and was the 2015 Express-News All-Arena Softball Player of the Year during her freshman season at Canyon High of New Braunfels, Tex.

Grace Lyons, Firecrackers AZ-Hinkle (Ariz.): Lyons, ranked No. 3 in FloSoftball’s 2018 Hot 100, might be one of the most spectacular defensive shortstops in the nation. The Oklahoma-commit also hit .419 with 41 RBI to help O’Connor High of Phoenix, Ariz., to win Arizona’s Division I state title. She could keep the Firecrackers in the hunt for a 16U Premier title.

Montana Fouts, Beverly Bandits-Team Demarini (Ohio): The 6-foot-1 Alabama-commit has been clocked in the 66-68 mph range and coule have the Bandit in the hunt for the 14U Premier national title. Fouts is ranked No. 8 on FloSoftball’s 2018 Hot 100.

Skylar Wallace, Gerogia Impact-Lewis (Ga.): The Alabama-committed SS is a switch-hitter with tons of speed. Wallace, who runs track for her high school, batted .545 at last year’s PGF Nationals and she could make Georgia Impact a factor in the 14U Premier Division.

Lauren Mathis, Wichita Mustangs (Kan.): Mathis is no fireballer, but it’s hard to find anyone in the country who spins it better and she generates a ton of Ks with her screwball, which should give the Mustangs a chance in the 16U Premier Division.
