Utah heads south of the border in February for the 2024 Puerto Vallarta College Challenge, before returning stateside for the Mary Nutter Classic.
Utah's two marquee tournament appearances set the tone for a campaign loaded with potential and expectations for the Utes.
Get to know about their outlook and the two tournaments that will help kick off their 2024 season.
How Did Utah Softball Do In 2023?
Wins over Cal, fifth-ranked Washington and second-ranked UCLA over three days powered Utah to its first Pac-12 Tournament championship.
The Utes parlayed their success at the conference tournament into a dominant run through both their NCAA Regionals and Super Regionals.
Utah went 5-1, downing Southern Illinois, Ole Miss and San Diego State en route to Oklahoma City and the Women's College World Series.
Utah bowed out after losses to Washington and Oklahoma State, but the Utes' final record of 42-16 established a new standard for the program.
Who Coaches Utah Softball?
Amy Hogue coaches Utah softball, a post she has held since 2008.
Hogue is a Utah alumna and contributed to a pair of Women's College World Series runs in the 1990s. She replicated the feat as a coach for the first time last season in what also was the winningest campaign of her time leading the Utes.
Has Utah Ever Won The Women’s College World Series?
No, Utah has never won the Women's College World Series.
The Utes first advanced to the WCWS in 1985, and that followed a pair of appearances in the event during the Association for Intercollegiate Athletics for Women era.
Hogue played for Utah on both the 1991 and 1994 WCWS teams, the last Utah squads to go that far before the 2023 run.
Notable Returning Players
Mariah Lopez, P
A third-team All-American in 2023, Mariah Lopez had an unforgettable season. She went 23-7 with a 2.87 ERA over 197 2/3 innings pitched, striking out an incredible 206.
Lopez has improved her pitching numbers each year she's been at Utah, trimming a 6.58 ERA in 2021 to 3.96 in 2022, before last year's sterling mark.
Opposing batters' averages have dropped from .289 to .244 to .219 in her three seasons thus far.
Haley Denning, UTL
Super-senior Haley Denning has been one of the Pac-12's most consistent hitters throughout her career, batting better than .370 in each of her three full seasons as a Ute.
Last season, she went .389 with 75 hits.
Once on base, few are more dangerous than Denning, who heads into 2024 with 100 career stolen bases.
Notable Newcomers
Jolie Mayfield, UTL
Local recruit Jolie Mayfield comes to Utah by way of Riverton High School with no shortage of fanfare.
Mayfield set a state prep record for home runs with 18 in 2022. She's a two-time All-American who should be able to compete in the Utes lineup from Day 1.
Reese Lee, OF
The highest-rated of Utah's incoming signing class, Reese Lee was a reliable hitter at Queen Creek High School in the Phoenix area.
She hit north of .450 each of the past three seasons, culminating in a .459 senior season.
