On Friday, January 29th, I met one of the best pitchers in the world; Monica Abbott! I not only met her but was lucky enough to have a private lesson with her. My hitting instructors Penny and Roman Foore who coach Division 3 softball for Bethel University in Minnesota helped set up my lesson. Roman is an assistant coach with the professional fastpitch team Monica plays for, the Chicago Bandits. I was so excited to meet and have her work with me since we have so many things in common including: being a left-handed pitcher, playing for The University of Tennessee (where I have been verbally committed since 2013), and being over 6 feet tall.
During my recruiting process, while on my unofficial visits to UT, I noticed Monica’s retired jersey #7 hanging up in the clubhouse and her numerous records set and awards won while pitching for Tennessee from 2004-2007. It was apparent Monica was a legend. After I committed to play for the Lady Vols and co-head coaches Ralph and Karen Weekly, I was always asked by reporters, people, fans, and of course FloSoftball, “Have you met Monica Abbott?” I would say no and reply “I hope to while I am at Tennessee”.
I will be the first lefty pitcher since Monica graduated in 2007 to pitch at the University of Tennessee. It was an honor and a privilege to meet her and have her support in my journey. I know the challenge ahead is great and I am working hard to bring a National Championship to the University of Tennessee.
