Monte Sherrill, the 2014 NFCA National High School Coach of the Year, announced today that he is resigning as the softball coach at Alexander Central in Taylorsville, N.C. to take the head coaching job at Pfeiffer University in Misenheimer, N.C. located about an hour and a half way.

Sherrill was the coach at Alexander Central for 22 years and Central Cabarus (Concord, N.C.) for four years prior to that.

His overall coaching record is 753-60, which is an astounding .926 win percentage and his teams have 10 state championships at the 4A level – eight coming at Alexander Central — including the 2014 team which went undefeated at 33-0 and was honored as the USA Today and NFCA National Champions.

“I am so excited to start this new chapter in my life and come back to my college roots,” Coach Sherrill told FloSoftball this morning.

“I am thankful to Coach Bob Reasso, Coach Jack Ingram and Pfeiffer University for the opportunity to lead the softball program.  We will be a program built on the Coach Joe Ferebee (legendary baseball coach at Pfeiffer) tradition of solid defense and pitching along with great hitting.  We will play a fast and aggressive style of college softball.  Our team will be proud to represent Pfeiffer University.”

The legendary coach says he will shoot for the same lofty goals at the college level that he achieved in the high school ranks for over a quarter century.

“”As a high school coach, the only goal was to win the State Championship and I see no reason to change moving to the college level. I love to teach the game and I love to see the game played at a high level. My goal would be to have our squad to compete for a National Championship in a short period!”
